I'm looking to get a quad for my little guy. He has a Kawasaki 50 but needs to step up to an 80 or 90 for the dunes. Do you guys have any recommendations for kids quad that will pull the sand? Don't want to be digging him out of the sand all day. Also, 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

I am supposed to go look at an LT80 today for my 3.5yo. It's a 2stroke automatic with electric start. I think this will work out well for him and myself since he will be able to restart it. I am just gonna limit the throttle amount and him riding it in sand should keep the speeds down until he has the experience.

On a side note, what helmet is he useing? I am trying to find a light weight full face. Think of getting a mtn bike helmet. All the mx ones seem to heavy for him.

I had a kymco mongoose 90 4 stroke and a polaris scrambler 90 2 stroke for the kids . The 2 stroke is much better for the dunes. Night and day really but the 4 stroke did ok on the mostly flatter riding areas. The 2 stroke 90's and lt 80's are very popular dune kids quads. If you start to push them for performance then they can become a lot of work in a hurry. It is tuff for a 4 year old getting them something that they can fit. Going with an older 50 that was a 2 stroke would be a big step up from the newer 4 stroke suz, kawi and kymco type 50's.

Rupp, there are some good bmx helmets available to look at as well for the slow little ones. I remember looking at some made by fly for that use but never had them use one.

My buddy just picked up a dmr if I'm saying it rite, but it's a full national mini and got a ton of parts for a real good price. He found that from a forum on these minis and the guy delivered it from indy to mi. I will find the info for that forum for you.

Those are drr jamie. Those and the apex are killer mini's just more maintainance and less reliability then what we are normally use to. Newer ones are water cooled and they can make a wicked duner. You can get a lot of info on all of the above in the mini section at atv riders. Lots of other dads to help you out.

Just keep in mind the raptor 80 has less power and growth then the others and a terrible design in that solid front axle. That being said it should be reliable and get your child through some time and then you can upgrade. It is a very difficult age to find a quad that fits their size and meets what you are looking for. The 2 cycle suzuki 50's also sold some by kawi were great for the little ones before they made them 4 stroke. They are still ok for the littlest just very low power for skill growth. Kawasaki switched from rebadging suzuki mini's to rebadging kymco mini's and are just kymco mongoose line with different plastics. Whatever you do will be a blast for the kids and get them out there riding. 80-90 4 stroke are ok in the flat area's and fun for the kids.

My son has the kawa 50 (aka susuki 50) 2 stroke.  Good little quad.  Just needs some more power.  Clutch releases too soon and it does not build up rpm's high enough to get him out of the sand ruts.

The 80 and most 90 4 stroke won't have any more power then that 2 stroke 50. Are the restrictors removed?

I did remove the restrictors from the exhaust.  CT makes a pipe kit that I was thinking about to.

Here is some more ristrictor reading. Make sure that are all removed and that what you are reading is not talking about the 4 stroke and is talking about what you have. There is more then just the ex.

There is also more to find on the net. You may be making a big mistake by going to a 80-90 4 stroke of the same physical size. Taller tires etc help them on the rutted "camp tracks" a lot but it sounds like you are in search of 80-90 2 stroke power when you move on from the completely uncorked 50 2 stroke.

We have a 2006 Raptor 80 and my 11 year old loves it. He's been riding it about 6 months now as his first ATV. It is a little behind the times with the solid front end as etccb mentioned but it does have decent power. We got it used and wanted to get all new plastic and tires for it which have proven to be a little challenging because nobody made aftermarket plastic so you have to catch a set of OEM on ebay or just buy new from the dealer. Personally, I would look at the 2013 Honda TRX90 which is the spitting image of a TRX450R. It has independent front suspension and kick starter for back up (something the Raptor 80 doesn't offer). This could offer your little guy the chance to start feeling like a man way before his time and a good 6 plus years of enjoyment before you have to worry about getting something else.
