Alright, I made it down to the okgoldrush and competed in the XC event.  This was the first time I've ever raced and like an idiot I wasn't watching further out for the flagger.  I was staring at the dude near me so I started late!  Anyways, I was making up ground and you'll see what happens.

My fuel, wiring, kill switch and everything I can check externally was fine.  I pulled the plug and it was soaked.  I was able to get it pull started but it would run like crap and it couldn't even handle over half throttle in 2nd gear in the mx area.  It finally gave up on starting.  I pulled thew stator cover and the ignition looked fine.  While trying to kick start it in the pits it would occasionally make a "plap" backfire sound.

It's lunch right now and I pulled the cover off again but I don't have a flywheel puller.  I did try starting it and even disconnected the kill switch and no changes.  This time it's not making the backfire sound.  I have no kickback either.  I also have fine compression.  At least it feels like it did before the problem occurred.  I was told that it could be the woodruff key.  Any other thoughts?  In addition to this I can slowly turn the flywheel and I know the cylinder is moving because I can hear it moving air like normal.

It just doesn't seem to be getting spark.

Thanks man. I have been planning for this race while I was deployed and hadn't even began to build this bike. I'm going to get this thing sorted out and represent the R. Hell, there were only 3 two stroke quads there. A banshee, a quadzilla and me. I was the only one racing.

Many people wanted to see it run and I had tons of compliments. At least it looked good like you said!

That's a fun race. That's terrible you had such bad luck. Quad was looking and sounding good til it died. Get a fresh plug and plug it into your cap(without one in the motor) and kick with your finger on the plug. You'll find out if you have spark. That's how I do it. Or you could just touch the plug to anything metal and look for spark, but where's the fun in that? I'll be there for sure next year with fresh shocks and my LSR frame build I'm gonna do.

That sucks man....especially after all the work you did to get there.  But that's the way it is sometimes.  I looked and that is a 13 hour drive for me.  I would really like to run that next year.

I was going to say lean but didn't want to tell him.  In the video it sounds leaner than I like to hear them.  Sounded like it was "struggling" on top.  Also looked easy to kick over in the video.  My Harley was flat and sounded weird until I got the jetting dialed in.  Now it has crisp throttle response and sounds even louder!

I did take it apart and she was lean. I thought back about how I never had a good seal on the exhaust manifold/pipe area. That morning it was a little messier than normal and actually had exhaust coming out at one point. I didn't think much of it because I think I was too excited to race.  Well, that leak most likely caused me to lean out and it jacked up the piston. Not much at all on the cylinder but the piston is done.

I'll try to compress the pics some and get them on here. This site doesn't like larger files. I shoot RAW images and they start at about 25 mb each! It sounds off but that's the way it is when shooting that quality.

PC I ALWAYS make sure my quad is hot before the start. It's chilly in the morning when they start and you(everyone, not just you) just hop on it and hit that that pavement pretty much right away. That's a very easy way to seize a motor. They line you up and then you usually end up sitting there for around 5 mins. Right around 4:42 you go down into the bus stop and cut that guy off on the inside. That's not the fast way. Stay to the outside on that corner(especially in supermoto) because it usually bunches up into that corner and you can easily just motor around everyone on the outside(which becomes the inside for that next little corner before the hill). From there you were making a run up into the hill with the right hander when it all went wrong. In that right hander you want to stay left for as long as you can then cut in. Do it right and you can easily carry 10 more mph into that corner and hit it wide open without lifting on the throttle. IMO it's hard on your motor to be running it wide open for long stretches then lift some. Again IMO you're better off to pull in the clutch and blip the throttle some to get some fuel into it and cool it off, if you're gonna let off to begin with. Sooner or later though you gotta downshift a gear or two for some of the corners that you didn't make it into. Jetting is very important for this race. You can burn a motor up quick as you found out.

Piston intake, top and exhaust.  Two of the slight reed damage.

Mennis I feel ya 100% on that. I watched the supermoto from the bus stop area and I saw that the good guys picked those lines.

About it being cold I did have it jetted to this climate but I really really think the exhaust leak at the manifold was a big cause of the failure. I actually did warm it up for a while. At the trailer, rode it around, at the racers meeting and for the 10 minutes of video I cut out.

Sorry for your misfortune. You see too many of those piston pics. As our resident tech guy (Dave) says, " Get them new parts and get that thing going" :onthego: Good luck!

Pricecheck, I just went to the races website and wow that looks like a fun race.  I was surprised how long it is, like 5 laps of 11 miles each or something like that, holy crap. I might try to go run beginner next year but certainly wouldn't brave it on a big bore, my stock R would wear me out.
