I am looking to have an 86 stock cylinder ported for low- mid range power.  Basically looking to get the smoothest power and most torque out of a stock cylinder.  I wanted to hear who has a low to mid range ported stock cylinder, how you like it and who did it....

I'm planning on running it on a long rod motor, spacer plate and set up for 50-50 race/93.....

If you have any other advice for a torquey trail/woods motor set up I'd love to hear it!
Thanks!

You want to send it to none other than Laz @ GThunder

Agreed.  I'm running a stock cylinder ported by Neil, spacer plate, 220 lbs of compression, and the trx5 pipe and it runs really good.

Thanks guys... I kinda forgot abut laz.... Neil was at the top of my list.... Followed by ken oconnor racing because he is in my backyard....
Keep the replies coming!
And I have a pwk 35 and 36... Which do you think would be a better carb for low to mid power?

I had my cylinder ported by Eric Gorr. I run a 39 pwk and ride trails all the time. The powerband hits pretty had but is manageable.
I really like my setup. Plenty of power but not so much it is unrideable in the woods.

If you want to keep the optimum low/mid power and throttle response on that OEM cylinder you don't want to go much bigger than a 36.

Low/mid power is Laz's expertise, he's been running the full GNCC series back when 250r's were still the main machine used. Hard to argue with his resume

You can also go view the GThunder section on the QuadZone forums and look at the 250r build he did for GNCC pro Jeff Pickens. He used an OEM cylinder in that build as well

If you go the 85/86 cylinder route & going to bump the compression up, best to be sure the head stay is in place to support the cylinder.
The 85/86 year 250R cylinders, were weaker casting in the reed chamber area than the 87 & up & when high compression is used, they tend to bust down the side of the cylinder casting, so that head stay must be in place to give the old model cylinders support.

What pipe are you going to run?  The pipe has a HUGE influence on the shape of the power curve.

hey whats the starting diameter on most 250r pipes ?  checked a ktm250 pipe and its 40mm which seems about right given its state of tune. wondering if a 250 tuned to the max might need a diameter closer to 50mm.  maybe they are around 50 on something like the esr11 ?
to much power is almost enough

my old LRD motor certainly had plenty of low end for my trial riding fun
