advancing timing?
« on: December 24, 2013, 01:12:16 PM »
I currently run my 86 oem electricals with no kickback and it runs awesome, im not ready to fork out for the cr yet.. I like my lights, my question is I just ordered a new rpm timing advance and was wondering if its just person preference or what would be good to set it at, I only ride hay fields and the dunes, ct350 39pwk and led 350 pipe. Thanks Austin

I have an RPM timing advance too but it has been a while since I adjusted it.  When I first got it I just played around with it until I arrived at the best setting.  If I remember correctly it is not that far off from the stock setting but I can't remember if it is retarded or advanced.  One note of caution, you have to be careful about extreme settings.  Too much advance and you actually reduce power (because it fires too early) and you overheat the engine.  I think I read recently where the ideal is to have maximum cylinder pressure 15 to 20 degrees after top dead center.  This gives the cylinder maximum leverage on the crank.  The trick is to find the point where you get that and I think the stock setting is pretty close, at least for engines that are not highly modified.
