Hinson 8 Plate Setup - How to Tell?
« on: December 28, 2013, 01:30:19 PM »
Going to look at an R that supposedly has a full 8 plate setup behind a quick change cover.  If I pulled just the quick change plate off, would I be able to count all the plates?  Or would I need to pull the full clutch cover off?

If you can see the plates, then yes you can tell that way.
The 8 plate setup, everything is different, the outer basket, inner basket & the pressure plate are all Hinson stuff & by it being a thicker clutch pack, the cover has to be different as well.

You need to ask which trans oil has been used also, because Hinson recommends a special oil be used with that clutch set up, something about making the plates last longer.

Thanks Neil. I knew the basket has to be 8 plate specific (or at least machined deeper) and their QC cover is needed to clear the added size but didn't know the pressure plate and hub were also different. So those are specific to the 8 plate rather than the standard hinson OEM replacement hub and plate?

Thanks for bringing up the specific oil - that isn't a deal breaker if it hasn't been run though is it?

The lettering on them is different. I can't remember what but the 8 plate says something different on it than the 7 plate.
It goes fast over bumps too!

I saw where guy was selling his Hinson QC cover because it wouldn't work with his 8 plate setup.

Some Hinson cover plates  are thicker and have more inside clearance. I use the thin one with a custom adapter plate welded to the stock cover.

A member was gracious enough to send me some pics of his Hinson 8 Plate clutch setup so I'm going to post them for future reference.

Note that the pressure plate says "TRX250R-02" for the 8 plate.  For the standard 7-plate it should say "TRX-250R-01"
