sick of 4 strokes, time to go old school
« on: January 27, 2014, 11:21:17 AM »
was randomly floating through craigslist the other day, and i saw a beautiful trx. i think it was love at first sight and i knew i had to have it. after spending countless hours building and tuning me and the wifes 4 strokes, i decided it was time. i posted up a partout thread for my duner in a 4 stroke forum, and after selling the majority of the aftermarket parts i had enough to go get her. i have been lurking for a long time, but have recently joined, i hope i can be a contributing part of this community!

i have had and worked on 2 strokes since i was young, but a few years back turned to 4 strokes due to claims of reliability. sure they are reliable when they are stock and not modded, but once i got into dealing with starter electrical systems, dry sump oil systems, valvetrains timing etc etc etc i just parted it out and cut my losses. i also have a tri-z, a old kx250, and my little brother rocks a 86 atc with a 310 prox. it is sexy.

i thought i got a steal on my bike, until i got it home and found out why he let it go so cheap. it is esr cases, full hinson clutch, 350 cylinder, 4 mill crank, 39 pwk, esr 11 pipe, marvin shaws, really set up pretty nice, but under further inspection... the frame is crap. the top rear motor mount is busted and gone, head stay is busted and half of it is gone, swingarm bolt mount has been busted on both sides and rewelded, pegs are welded on, and main frame is cracked in front of left peg. i will for sure get some pics after work this evening and post them up, thx for the warm welcome :)

Welcome Jesse.  I don't know the deal you got but don't let it bring you down.  Look at it as a chance to rip it all apart and service all bearings and such.  Get you another frame and reassemble it.  Learn every nut and bolt and take pride that you've got a legend that can still kick 4-poke butt.

It does sound like you have a pretty sweet setup.  Was it your swingarm that is messed up or the frame part?  I've got an 86 swingarm and an 88/89.  Even have the top motor mount piece for an 88 frame.  Few odds and ends basically.

thats funny because that is exactly how i look at it, because i was planning on getting another frame and doing the gusseting/ powdercoating and just swapping everything else over. its not the swingarm, it is the two tabs on teh frame where the swingarm pivot bolt goes, and from research they break alot. the swingarm is nice +6 chromoly. it is an 88.

Definitely get with Pumashine on here for a gusset kit.  He's got a lot of different kits for the different years.  To me, at a very reasonable price.  That's one thing I didn't do before I powdercoated and I'm not happy about that.

Like all others, welcome again and get some pics up!

I would stay away from gusseting a frame with multiple wounds. Have done this before and breaks show up the same place and elsewhere. Gusseting the frame is recommended to help in racing and other strenuous activities with the R. The repair game is not a path you want to follow. Many guys here get a good frame, sandblast, gusset and PC to get something to be trouble free for a long time. Same amount of time spent to put gussets in. But the old frame keeps breaking and the new one won't see problems for a long time.

I stand corrected Jesse!  I'm glad to know that about repairing/gusseting and I'm glad mine isn't broken (that I can tell).
