I currently plan on running my OEM ignition on my Sphynx. And after talking to Arlan about CR ignitions, he mentioned the PVL which I completely forgot about.

Anybody have experience with these? Maybe a good option other than the CR?

The ignition is great. The kickback will break your leg and kicker.

I am not having problems with kick back, but I usually run the digital version.

Some like em some don't. I like being able to set my timing were I want it.

If you use the Digital CDI, start the ignition timing at .85mm btdc. I like the Digital because it advances and retards the timing more than analog systems. This means a wider powerband on 250's and 125's. 500's probably do not benefit as much because they do not turn enough rpm to benefit as much from the retarding of the ignition at high rpm. Retarding the ignition increases the exhaust temperature which makes the pipe act like it is shorter. This increases rev out. Some big displacement engines may not rev to the point that this effect occurs. The digital ignition retards the timing at kicking speed to just about eliminating kit back. It then advances timing up to about 3800 rpm up to about 22' . This improves low end and acceleration.
If you run the Analog CDI, start the timing at 1.80 mm btdc. The Analog also works well and is generally used on larger displacement engines. The Banshee however also uses an Analog PVL ignition and it works amazing. In some case you may see slightly more peak hp with the Analog PVL on the TXR 250. Usually the digital is less sensitive to timing, less likely to have detonation and gives a wider power band. PVL also offers bolt on flywheel weights.   You really can't go wrong with PVL in my opinion.

For sure. We all know the PVL is good but a leg breaker. Nice to hear the opinion of a builder that has experience and time on these. What's the cost of a PVL? I see them for sale from time to time. I've shied away from PVLs because of the said kick back issues. I feel a little more at ease give Arlans input.

I run a pvl on my 370 duner/hillshooter. I had bad kick back for months and come to find out i had a weak/bad ground. fixed that and i hasnt had a kickback since.

That is good information taft372. Also a bad ground will cause the ignition to fail.

Too much initial timing will also cause the dreaded kick back

Same here, bad experience with it. They are both digital and run around $500-$600. I have 2 of these I took off the ct 410. I am guessing they were set to far advanced or had a bad ground. Just hurt too much to want to figure it out. They are a a pain to install for the average Joe like me. I have at least one good working system if any one is interested.

I bought  motors with the PVL ignitions set up as drag motors. In time my brother put them on 250's. I have 2 but I think the stator is out  on 1 of them. I will ask Josh as you were the OP.
