Polaris 400 Cylinder on 250r
« on: April 04, 2014, 12:31:10 AM »
I recently purchased a 88r.  It has 330 Prox cylinder.  I am now looking at another r with a 400 Polaris cylinder, I'm not sure of the power and reliability of this set up.  Does anyone have experience with them?  Or is this something I should shy away from?  The quad has not been ran in 3 years.  A local shop did the work and the guy ended up in jail then rehab and has never called.  Now I will have an opportunity to buy the quad or motor. Let me know your thoughts.

If you can buy it for a good price i'd say hell why not?

There's a few guys on here who have some pretty extensive knowledge of the "Polonda" motors, i'm sure they'll chime in soon

I would would not buy it.  I have responded to this same question before on this site. Do a search if you want more detailed information on the unavoidable problems associated with this build.

In the end I just dont see you saving any money over a sphynx or puma built with the same crank specs
Anyone looking for a great builder I highly recommend the following.
For CP products dealers I would recommend:
Arlan at LED(site sponsor), Pete Schemberger at Hybrid Engineering, Mat Shearer at Shearer Custom Pipes, Dennis Packard at Packard Racing, and Nate McCoy of McCoys Peformance.

Other great builders I also would recommend: Neil Prichard, Jerry Hall, Bubba Ramsey and James Dodge.

I would say depends on who built it what rod is on the crank and maybe what kind of riding you will be doing. I have a 395 polonda I bought mine as a whole bike for $2200. Mine is a drag motor I will be running in my trike chassis. For as much as I have in just the motor I couldn't build another drag puma motor. I will not be racing this all the time tho just something for fun that was cheap.

As for any Hybrid, the reliability depends upon the builder who put it together. It may be a lemon or it may be the best bike you had ever ridden. I get the same question about the Pilot cylinder. I purchased a cylinder on ebay and Pete at Hybrid engineering work some magic on it. Besides the Puma it is definitely the best motor I have ever had. It has a 83.5 mm Polaris piston which is very common with the polonda you are referring to.

it may cost more but it doesnt make sense not to look at the cpi jugs. any cylinder with a mono port and no auxillaries is ancient technology. like 1985 ancient
to much power is almost enough

Thank you all for the feedback.  I think I'll pass on the bike for now.  I'll just run the 330 motor.  I'm excited to get my quad up and running for a trip to St. Anthony's in June.  Maybe next winter I'll transfer everything to a LRD frame I picked up.

Forgot to mention one thing to you. After all the modification and welding the spacer plate never seemed to seal. My polonda always had a skirt of sand around it by the end of the day.
