What happend to my spark??
« on: April 11, 2014, 12:30:16 AM »
Today I decided to give the bike a test ride before heading down to the snake hunt in a few weeks. It was running fine for about 45 minutes until the engine started sputtering and would not rev up. So I put a new plug in and once it started It was running even worse, this time it kept backfiring and eventually died. Now the bike has no spark at all, I checked the coil and stator according to the manual and they seem to be in good shape. All grounds and connections are good, however, It does have an aftermarket CDI and not an OEM honda. I know the oem is much better but when I bought the bike the previous owner had just installed this cdi, so its only a few weeks old. Is it possible that this cdi could have gone bad that quickly??

check all electrical components with a multimeter and if everything else is within spec, then it confirms your CDI is bad.

Oh yes, get an oem cdi. Hands down. Check the flywheel key too.
I ride PINNED! Therefore, no bdt in this household.

Ok, I will check everything again before I order a CDI. Just curious, what causes the CDI to go bad while riding??

all electronics fail after a certain amount of cycles, but the chinese stuff fails much sooner simply because of poor quality and design

Which CDI should I go with, 88-89 or a 86-87?? I've heard there is a timing difference between the two but I have no idea what year bike my wiring harness is from.

Update, I think I found the problem haha. I had to forgot to check the pulse generator. I went to test it and nothing came up on the ohm meter. So I started eyeing around behind the stator cover and found that the flywheel had worn the wire in half! Is this something I can solder, or should I replace the whole stator setup??
