Ok so, I was looking at buying a top-end gasket kit from ct racing that had the cr250 head gasket and 2 base gaskets, description said 2 were needed. I called them to order it and they said they didn't have any left and that cometic had stopped making that gasket, that seemed a little odd but whatever. They also didn't have a 68mm piston. So I called LA Sleeve. They had a top-end kit with the cr250 head gasket but it only has one base gasket. I asked the guy about it, he didn't seem to know why I would need 2 base gaskets. I ordered the kit and 68mm piston anyway. So the question is: do I need 2 base gaskets when running a cr250 head gasket?

I think you only need 2 base gaskets if your running a spacer plate under the cylinder. I may be wrong though ive never ran a spacer.

I've never ran a spacer plate either, but I think patman hit it on the head! Only need two if running a spacer plate under the jug!

The extra base gasket is to raise the ports and lower the compression slightly.

So if I run race fuel I should only need one base gasket? Or should I run two so that the ports are raised?

I have different thicknesses of base gaskets I ordered from Cometic. I have around 10 stock head gaskets with the 3 parts riveted together if you need any. Also got 40 of the taller cylinder studs for the spacer plate mod. You don't need to stack base gaskets unless your builder specifically designed it that way. But it is better to use 1 gasket the correct thickness. No reason to run 2 base gaskets if you are running race fuel.

Thanks guys. I think I'll just run one base gasket and switch to race fuel.

this probly doesnt apply to you but if your into tinkering and porting your own stuff then stacking base gaskets will let you change the transfer axial angles more so than just with 1 standard base gasket. and if you work with various types of cylinders with various casting thickness then extra base gaskets can be usefull so not to punch a hole into a waterjacket. so extra gaskets can be handy depending what your doing
to much power is almost enough

I do like tinkering and so on, however right now I'm under a time crunch and just need to get this stock engine back together. I'm moving across country and don't want to move with the engine in pieces. Once I get settled in I might look into porting as well as a few other things.
