Billet trans/override question
« on: July 10, 2013, 08:20:27 PM »
Tore into the puma today and found the gears and trans to be in perfect shape.  I believe what happen ( what Packard suggested) is it was back loaded inbetween 1st and 2nd. I had a jockey on my bike last weekend and told her to take off in 2nd. Packard said sometimes on a 2nd gear launch it can get stuck inbetween and the only way to fix it is to split the cases
But the question I have is on the shift star, one is oem and the other had been welded and machined can so eone tell me what one to use?   I'm thinking the one star that I've been running is from a Packard 1/4 netural down override that I use to run.  Thanks

I don't think you need a different shift star. I am running the one I had set up on my 1-5 n down stock trans with my billet. I had my stock trans in my puma get stuck in gear a few times and I never split the cases. I just rocked the bike back and forth and it got  unstuck both times.

I can't remember I would have to ask my buddy. But I think you have to mod the shift star also for n down along with the shift drum. So that maybe what's different between them is. When mine locked up it felt really tight also but popped out. It happened both times right at the light.

What pattern are you suppose to run? your drum pattern needs to match the star as you probably know.

IMO the welded and reshaped drum would need to be run if you still are N down but I have not messed with a N down before

if you notice the welded one on the left has a dip ground in the 1st gear star to keep the bike in neutral while down, while the old N star has been welded and reshaped as a normal star
Anyone looking for a great builder I highly recommend the following.
For CP products dealers I would recommend:
Arlan at LED(site sponsor), Pete Schemberger at Hybrid Engineering, Mat Shearer at Shearer Custom Pipes, Dennis Packard at Packard Racing, and Nate McCoy of McCoys Peformance.

Other great builders I also would recommend: Neil Prichard, Jerry Hall, Bubba Ramsey and James Dodge.

Hey Morse, that tranny is originally from K&T so if you have any questions you could call Kim. Packard don't do the neutral down.

He might have got it mixed up with Derbys engine. But I'm positive Packard don't do the neutral down, I remember him telling me he wasn't a fan of the neutral down.
