Ya, but you cant change one out during a race if you bend/snap it.  I race at a very good clip, and bending/braking axles are not my thing.  You can run stock if you want to, but its not for me.  check .net for the group buy.

Assuming you can find a place to properly harden it.  There is a balance between hardness and toughness so that the axle can flex without yielding, but being hard enough to not crack.

RPM still makes the XC axle for the 400EX which you would need EX hubs for as they have a different spline count. I run an older 250R RPM XC axle and it is very heavy duty. The width is setup about ~46" with 4B+5 wheels which is pretty good for woods/hare scrambles.

RPM has said they will make the 250R one again if we can get 5 people committed.

Can you get a better price than the discount on the web if you get the 5 axle order?  Count me in for (1) at the web discount price of $416 or I'd even consider (2) if you can work out a discount to get it below $400.  Hate to spend the money but I don't want this one to slip away like some of the other premium 250R parts.  Plus I want to run RPM hubs and they don't make them for the 400ex axle.

Well you should be able to run 250R hubs on the 250R RPM axle as well.

I believe there are a few others. TLR is handling it.

I guess i mis understood what TLR posted. His buy 5 deal was from a few years ago.  I thought it was current.   Im going to call RPM on monday and see what they can do.

Why I sold my 400ex without trying this is beyond me.  Besides the hubs, do you need anything else to run the 400ex axle?  Sprocket and brake splines line right up?  Bearing carrier is the same I guess which then begs me to ask about the brakes.  You could run either the 400 complete setup or the R?  Is this correct...

Offline Burns363R

Yes you can run a 250R setup. I ran a 400ex axle for years on my spare bike.  All that is needed is the wheel hubs.
