Author Topic: Potential trx 250r (Read 5777 times)

Hello,

I am new to the forum, and joined because I have been bitten by the 250r bug...I have a potential option in which I would be trading my 02 400ex for an 86 trx 250r. What I know about it is that the top end was just replaced with onlyten hours or so on it, frame has been powder coated with no evident cracks. the swing arm and rear axle were replaced when the top end was done. plastics are junk, but it starts up on the first or second kick... any thoughts?

Welcome and I say go for it! Unless of course you have alot of money tied up in the 400. Then I would demand some cash with the 250r or just sell the 400 and find a 250R. You won't regret it! These machines have a way of hooking you hard.

I agree completely. Ditch that 02 400ex and get a real bike. Looks to have a stock set up and DG pipe. Should be a good runner. Do remember its 28 years old and you may have to check your rear bearings as the carriers will self destruct with bad bearings.

Thanks for the help! I think this confirms my decision. Thanks for the advice, Pumashine. I will check them out as soon as I own it. I will also post some better pics when Iget her cleaned up and get some real plastics for it...

Of all the 250r's I have owned since the mid to late 90's none have had a stock carrier in it anymore......long gone and replaced with a twin row. Way tougher! I would check/replace swingarm front bearings as when those go you can wreck your cases from rubbing.

The craigslist post is in Sand Lake which is north of Grand Rapids by about a half hour. I live in Grand Rapids, but my ride is in Westphalia, which is near Lansing...

I've got both. An '03 400EX and an '87 250R. The R is just so much more fun to ride, hands down. I've noticed 400EX parts (used aftermarket/eBay) have gotten cheaper lately, which is nice. They're getting closer to the R's prices. But there's just something about the way the R rides and the powerband... it's addictive.

I am happy to say that the r is MINE!!! she is gonna need some work though... any ideas where i can get a left crankcase? the lower bolt hole for the chain guard is broke...

esr or ebay but the case will cost a decent bit, its a real common thing to see on bikes this old.

Left cases are around $200-$300. If thats the only problem then its not worth the trade out. It can be repaired for much less

how can it be repaired? That is the only problem I can see as far as the case goes...
