stator question

So I lost spark again over the weekend and this time I think the stator is the culprit. The bike was running fine then got worse as I made my way back to camp. I came to a stop and shut off the bike and installed a new plug and as I went start the bike again I had no spark. While being towed back to camp I tried to bump start the bike and it fired but didnt run very well. I have checked the pickup coil, stator, and coil, and they are all in spec according to the clymers manual. I have tried 2 good cdi boxes and checked all grounds. I removed the flywheel nut to check if if sheared the woodruff key and its still intact. I have not checked the flywheel yet because the puller I ordered has not arrived yet. The stator is a caltric brand and is only a couple months old but I have read some bad reviews about these stators. My question is, if a stator is within spec on the ohm meter; could it still be not functioning properly??

From what I heard on stators from the local Honda mechanic is that if they test bad...they are bad.  And if they test good.....they still can be bad.  That was the case with one of mine more than 10 years ago.  Tested good but was junk.

Gotta test it cold and hot my friend. Sounds to me like a stator issue. Go oem for sure. Any aftermarket brand is junk. It'll run for a few months and that's it

I guess that I'm in need of a oem stator now haha. Also, is there anyway to test the kill switch??

Sure is, unplug it.

Although I doubt it's the kill switch due to it starting up again when bump starting it. Sure sounds like a weak spark to me. Also be sure to gap your plug no more than .024, that's the biggest gap recommended for oem ignitions. .018 is recommended. I know it seems silly, but it can make a world of a difference

do like pinned says and run the spark plug gap at .018

But more than likely the aftermarket stator is starting to fail, as the insulation breaks down in the wraps of wire it will create less and less voltage.

Also remove the flywheel and shake very hard, if you hear any noise the magnets are cracked and will also hurt the voltage output
Anyone looking for a great builder I highly recommend the following.
For CP products dealers I would recommend:
Arlan at LED(site sponsor), Pete Schemberger at Hybrid Engineering, Mat Shearer at Shearer Custom Pipes, Dennis Packard at Packard Racing, and Nate McCoy of McCoys Peformance.

Other great builders I also would recommend: Neil Prichard, Jerry Hall, Bubba Ramsey and James Dodge.

My plug is already gapped at.020 but I'll try the .018 later today. I had found a nice used oem stator and flywheel on eBay from an 86 atc. This should work with my 88 harness right? Once my puller arrives I will check the flywheel too

If you are running a standard electrode plug (BR8ES) try running a fine wire plug (BR8EG or BR8EIX) sometimes that will help a weaker ignition. See if you can get a resistance measurement of the stator after riding for a while and you notice the performance dropping off to see if it has changed from the cold measurement. Also make sure the plug wire is screwed tightly into the coil and the cap is screwed tightly onto the wire.

I currently run a br8eg already. The plug wire seems to be pretty tight inside the cab but Ill double check it again tonight.

Pulled the flywheel today and shook it next to my ear. sound like it was full of sand, Im assuming that was part of the problem.

same thing happened to me with the flywheel. i thought it was my jetting.. got a good flywheel and man it worked 100 times better!! mine also sounded like sand or marbles in there. hope this fixes your problem

update... Got the new/used flywheel and stator. The bike fired right up and revved great in neutral. Went for a test ride and it pulls great through midrange but just as it gets on the pipe it sputters and smokes alot. This bike has been an electrical nightmare lol. Where should I start to fix this problem??

Sounds like jetting is off. I went through kind of the same thing when my stator was going out.  I fought with the jetting.  Could never get it lean enough. And then it finally went out.  Put another one in and replaced the coil because it tested out of spec. Got my jetting dialed in and haven't had a problem since.

Jetting, sounds rich, go up on the needle clip, ride it, ten play with main.?

honestly the best solution for the OEM ignition problems is a cr250r ignition.  i know it is expensive, but its nice not to worry about a ignition related breakdown while deep in the woods.
