I've got a move to Alaska coming up and I'm pulling a horse trailer. I do have quite a bit of clearance and my tailgate can drop down without hitting. Why will I drop the tailgate? I'm putting the R in the bed if the truck and I'm trying to keep the trailer with enough room to sleep in it overnight.
I've got a 5.5' bed and my tailgate will only close half way. I could opt to wrap my babel over the latch rod but that puts excessive stress on the cable. I did some research and they make rods that keep your tailgate partially open. Why would I want to pay $40 for something that could be easy to build.
I used scrap angle iron from an old horse trailer sliding door, an old truck hitch pin that I cut down and some paint. The obvious tools were a couple of drill bits, welder and angle grinder with various wheels.
I attach the bed side first and as I pull against it to keep pressure I'll raise the gate to latch it. To disconnect I just pull the handle like normal. It fits very well. (I added some weld at the rod tip to act as a stop so it doesn't slip out somehow)

I've only got one side done for right now. Lots of other stuff came up. If you don't care about ease of disconnecting you could drill one hole and remove the stock rod on the bed and slide the bar through and reinstall the rod.
