TRX250r exhaust
« on: October 30, 2014, 01:42:26 PM »
Hey guys im new to the forum and 2-strokes in general.  I have an 05 trx450r but I recently just purchased a 1988 trx250r.  It needs all new exhaust from the the head back.

First question is what is a good low to mid range pipe that is not deafing?  The guy i bought it off looked like it was off a dirtbike and all hacked together.

Also the guy I bought if off said it might have an 86 motor in it but he wasn't sure.  Is there a way to find out this out with a tag somewhere and do they pipes differ from 86-89?

Also I removed the carb and took it apart.  It has a 150 main and 45 pilot? Does that seem about right for the jetting.  It still had the stock airbox lid on the one hold drilled in it.  I plan on taking the lid off completely off if that would be the better thing to do?

Thanks

Pipes are all the same for the 86-89. The motors can be identified through visual examination. But it is easiest with a picture of the front where the exhaust flange is.

If you are just looking to replace stock exhaust then a simple FMF exhaust system will work fine. You will need to check for the 3 stock exhaust hangers though. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-TRX250R-TRX-250R-FMF-FATTY-EXHAUST-PIPE-SILENCER-87-89-/151412064349?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2340dcc05d&vxp=mtr

Best way too tell if u got 86 or 88 cases
Is by looking at the front motor mount area on the motor
If u look there the cases are cut back in that area exposing the bolt that goes threw

Post a pic if u can

Some pipe companies offer a 86 version and 88/89 version
But the big names like ESR,LED,Paul Turner they are the same

Looks like a basic 86 motor
But with that spacer plate there means u got a 88 style crank with a 86 piston setup
The frame 88 style

Welcome to the site and don't be worried about the mumbo jumbo we speak. There were different cylinders and crankshafts for different years. It only means something if you are ordering replacement motor parts. It does appear to be an 86 motor but as far as pipes are concerned all years fit the same.

Welcome to the site. Lots of great info and knowledgeable people. I've spent hours reading old threads about this and that and have gained a lot of knowledge. I too came from the 4 stroke world and had lots of questions. I also have a similar setup, 88 frame with spacer plate to accommodate the 86 piston. Do some reading on the short rod vs long rod motors and that may clear up some questions you have. If not, ask away.

Ok thx guys I see what your saying now with the plate.  As far as the jetting is concerned, does that seem about normal.  The quad actually ran very well even with hacked up exhaust that was on it but it did not idle.

Thx transmatic i will do that:)  I read up a little and it seemed the 88 style was the better of the two with the motor.  Sux it's an 86 but it still runs good.

I've loved these quads since i was a kid watching old school huevos movies haha.  Im sure I will have many more questions thx!!!
