Author Topic: Hinson clutch basket on an 86 motor (Read 3013 times)

I just ordered a hinson basket for my 88 250r. It has an 86 motor in it. I got the basket and gears all apart and ready to go back into the new one.

It says to bevel the edge on the crank gear? I have no clue what they are talking about can someone help me out?

The gear at the end of the crank needs to be beveled so it does not hit the back of the clutch basket.

wouldnt beveling the corner of the basket be much easier ? a dremel and 15min is about all it would take

The gear is 1/2" wide and you bevel off 1/8". The basket is 1/8" thick. Bevel it 1/8" and the basket falls apart. Yes, this is an over exaggeration but you get what I mean. Problem comes when you put on a new crank and the gear is the wide gear. The 88-89 cranks had a thinner gear there. The earlier models had a thicker gear. So if the gear hits the basket you bevel the gear. It is not always necessary. If you do bevel the basket you would have to do it before you lock tite the kicker gear on.

using good judgment is always top priority. it was just a suggestion that may be simpler than grinding the gear. if it would excessively compromise the basket integrity then certainly dont do it. i had to grind a ktm basket one time in a similar manner but it had ample material to do so

The 88-89 drive gears are slimmer and clear the basket without any mods. 85-87 need the bevel to clear just like has been stated.
