Newly purchased 250R with ESR 330PV and a few questions
« on: May 23, 2015, 08:05:41 PM »
Hey guys, I just purchase a 86 250R and it has a ESR 330PV kit in it with TRX9 port. My question is about the overall setup of the quad. My goal with it is to run Hare scrambles as well as some general trail riding and it is currently set up chassis wise for this.

The previous owner was about 280# and I am 170#, so needless to say I will be getting the suspension redone.

Here is the motor setup now - ESR 330 PV w/ trx9 port, Paul Turner 2003 race pipe, ESR silencer, CR ignition, Billet exhaust flange, Pump gas dome but was told to run C16 in the quad with R50 @ 40:1 (which is fine, my drag car runs on it, but if there are other recommendations for fuel I am open, thinking about calling renegade), Air striker carb with 180 main and DGH needle with clip second up from taper, I have not checked the pilot jet out. I have not done a plug chop on it yet but the plug is very black.

I guess my overall question is, are the current parts somewhat mismatched? From what I have read the PT pipes are not the best for the hondas, would a TRX5 pipe be more suited for what I am looking for? There was a second pipe included in sale and it is a Bills pipe, but was told from sell that the motor runs too hot with it. Also, would I benefit from switching to the TRX7 port for my woods riding? The previous owner has a v-force reed cage in it, any better options? The previous owner adjusted the power valve, is there a baseline setting for me to adjust it back to? Gearing is 13/39 and it has a Yukon gear set in it. I do not mind changing things around as long as they are for the better.

After running for 10 minutes or so the motor will start to break up up top, what are the common causes of this to look at first? Lean it a jet size and see if it persists? There is no excessive smoke and bike seems to run fine everywhere else.

Any help is appreciated! If there is any pertinent info left out please let me know.

trx 9 is more of a dune port i believe so that will probably need to be addressed pm jerry hall or neil pritchard (C-leigh racing) and talk to them about it since the ESR porting is pretty mild they may be able to just rework your porting and get you where you need to be without having to buy another cylinder. nothing wrong with the PT pipes on an R but if its not a low mid pipe it will hurt you in the woods. i use a trx-5b now that i have a 310PV and like it i used to run the mid-east harescrambles some and at that time ran a bills pipe with a oem cylinder and low/mid port by BARRS racing. worked very well. i have never been impressed with the v- force reed cages for woods riding the boyesyen reed valves have always worked better for me. as for your jetting you are correct drop a jet size and see how it does. welcome to the site

Good advice here. Put in a new plug and do the plug test. Some guys throw in a huge main so they won't burn it up. If you like PT, I would find a PT type6 for low end. Welcome to the forum!

I believe the ESR TRX9 port is more of a mid-top port job, correct?

The TRX5 pipe might be better for your application. Doesn't mean the Paul Turner pipe is necessarily bad, just not the best for your type of riding.
