Need help with a running issue please..
« on: November 08, 2015, 12:06:34 AM »
So long story short,
This is our first Honda TRX250R..I trade a rebuilt with maybe 20mins of run time 1991 KX500 that runs perfect and really clean along with a clean 1993 KX500 basket case that didn't need much to get going again..So all in all I give around $4500.00 for this quad as thats what I valued my bikes on the low end money wise..Im disabled with spinal fusion in my neck and lower back so the plan "was" to trade my bikes for a really nice quad for my wife then sell or trade her other one for a nice/clean CR125R for myself..

Anyways,
I explain to this guy I haven't worked in 12 years because im disabled with spinal fusion in my neck/lower back so every dime I made doing odd jobs went into my bikes..After trying to start it (KX500) when I wanted to ride,I have no choice but to get rid of it and wanted a 200% nice running quad for my wife so she can upgrade from her Yamaha Blaster..This guy told me its a perfect quad and runs perfect so we agreed to trade..
Before he leaves to bring the quad to my house,he told me the nerf bars/foot pegs aren't on and will need bolted up as he forgot to do it..I said no big deal..10 or so mins before getting to my house he calls and ask if I had gas so he didn't have to stop and I said yes..When he gets here,he said the quad won't idle because the choke/idle assy is messed up and will give me the $30.00 for a new one..Said he just forgot to tell me..
Well he starts my KX500 and had a huge smile..We walk over to the TRX250R then put gas in it..As im putting gas in it,he ask what oil I use and what mix so I said 93 octane,Klotz oil and 32:1 mix..Right away he tells me its too much oil and will foul the plug out fast because of the engine build, said it needs to be 40:1..Told him i'll change it once the 1/4 gallon I put in runs out..
After 5 or so kicks,it fires up and he feathers it to keep it running...Me being the trusting idiot I am because he knows people I know,I was happy so traded and helped load both of my KX500's up..
Once he left,I started making room in my shed for the quad then started putting the nerf bars/foot pegs on..Couldn't because one of the mounting holes was ripped clean off which was still on the bolt on the bike..Talked to him about it and he claimed he forgot..
Go back outside to start the quad and pull it in the shed..Fires up 4th kick and as soon as I give it about 1/4 throttle,it popped/back fired..I held the throttle enough to idle and as soon as I pushed it again,it back fired again but started dying..Tried to start it again and no luck..Getting stressed out now so said screw it and pushed it into the shed..Got up today and give it a go again..Pulled it out and wouldn't start so pulled the plug to check it for spark which was good but saw a drip where the header flange and pipe meets, smelled it and was fuel..So I pulled the carb, cleaned the hell out of it and lowered the float..Checked the reeds also while the carb was off and they were good..One has a SUPER tiny gap that I could slide a piece of loose leaf paper in so not enough gap for a running issue like this..Get it back together, put gas in it..After a few kicks,it started for maybe 5 secs then died..Kicked it a few more times and back fired twice..

I never owned one of these quads and never had a built engine like this so don't know if the fuel/oil mix killed the plug..Tomorrow im getting a new plug, gallon of gas and mixing it 40:1 then pray my butt off..Also going to pull the pipe off and make sure its not full of oil/gas..

Is their anything else I should look at?I don't know if 32:1 will kill this plug that fast and honestly don't think it will..Im just really stressed out with this whole deal..

Has a built Paul Turner National engine,FmF exhaust and jets are 165/48 ..
What do you guys think, could it be from the oil/gas mix??
Sorry for the long post, just pretty stressed with everything..

I run 32:1 with a br8es plug on a stock motor and don't have any problems I don't think its your oil ratio just my opinion but don't give up the fight lots of knowledgeable people more than willing to wish I could give you more advice but im still new to the 250r and been out of the 2 stroke seen for almost 10 years

Well the choke  knob is your  idle adjustment  it  spins spin it left  or right  to adjust  idle and if itbis broken  it will cause all sorts  of running  issues  for you.  I would  replace that first if it is  broken  . So ya don't  go chasing problems caused  from that.

Its just to top of the knob thats missing,I can still turn it..When I check it,it was turned all the way clock wise so was closed so wouldn't idle..
Tell me if im wrong but im pretty sure its ready for a new set of rings, gaskets and wrist pin bearing..When he got here,I pushed the kick starter with my hand..I owned a bunch of CR,KX and YZ 250's,this quad doesn't even come close to having compression like any of my dirt bikes have...I mean it has compression but doesn't have that "thump" like im used to with my bikes..As soon as I pushed it,I told him I didn't want it and not trading..He asked why and I told him its because the compression is low..He swore up and down that the compression on the TRX250R quads is lower than CR250 dirt bikes..Did a search about 15mins ago and from what im seeing, compression on the TRX250R should be around 180PSI correct?Im renting a compression tester from Autozone tomorrow..Hook it up and kick it with throttle wide open until the needle stops then see where its at...

I wouldn't think that motor would have a stock carburetor. If it is a pwk the choke knob doesn't adjust the idle.

BTW,
I already know I can hone the cyl then put a new set of rings and wrist pin bearing on it and be good to go..When I had the intake off,I looked inside at the cyl and both piston and cyl look perfect..Thats not a big deal and not much money but im not trying to put money into something that was said to be ready to ride and runs perfect..I have no problems doing the work but shouldn't have to put money into it..

Thanks  for all the replys guys and I found the issue..It was the plug and plug  wire the whole dang time..Im guessing that the guy I got the quad from  didn't tighten the adapter that gos over the top of the plug and it came  off on him..Other than putting another adapter on it,he put a zip-tie  around the boot of the plug wire so it was tight around the plug..When I  started it the first time,it was fine until I hit the throttle a little  and thats when the issue started..What happened was the vibes made the  wire jump around and with me not knowing about it and kept kicking it,it  would back fire and flood out..Did the same thing even with the new  plug because I took the adapter off thinking it wasn't needed for that  plug boot..Ended up looking the plug wire over good the shined a flash  light up into the plug boot and was like WTF..Put the adapter on it and  fired right up smile emoticon ..Heres a video I took after putting the adapter on it and getting it running..Again,thanks so much guys..

Your video is set to private
I deleted it because I didn't wanna put the guy on blast until I was 200% sure of the issue which I posted in the reply above this one..Im still not happy with the compression but,its running and i'll re-ring it (hone, rings, wrist pin bearing and gaskets) once spring gets here..Tomorrow im taking it to a buddys and gets welding the part of the bracket back on the nerf bars/foot pegs so I can put them back on..He also has a few new choke/idle assys so putting a new one in the carb then adjusting air/fuel..If I can talk him into it,i'll have him take a video for me with my phone of me ripping it a little ...Thanks so much again everyone..I'll be around here for a LONG time and will be in the video/pic section alot lol...

Yup,not the brights for sure..I have no ideal why he rigged the plug wire like it was,I mean a plug cost me a whole $3 bucks..The quad is at a good home and will be very well taken care of by me,im very anal about my stuff..What I mean by anal is everyone says this quad looks really nice but IMO,it looks like shit..Im going to end up spending hours on top of hours with a Mothers Power Ball, sand papar and some good/quality paint..Its also never going to be beat to hell as its my wife quad..She just started learning on her Yamaha Blaster and has 2 days and a total of 8hrs on it,just started going into 2nd gear lol..I'll ride it every once in a while but im disabled (spinal fusion in my neck and lower back) so just like her,im not a hard rider anymore..I'll open it up in 2nd/3rd gear but thats about it..We also ride with our 6 year old so can't take off and leave him haha..
