Installing a pwk 38 a/s, but the cable isnt long enough?
« on: January 20, 2016, 01:21:24 AM »
I recently picked up a used keihin 38 air striker and a matching cable for it but it seems that the cable is too short. The slide won't drop down far enough with the adjuster backed all the way in. I'm not sure what thumb throttle the previous owner was using or if I'm using the correct one. So my question is, do I need to change the cable or my thumb throttle. I'm not to sure if I have a oem or some other model throttle assembly. Take a look at the pictures and tell me what you guys think, thanks

It looks to me like the throttle it self is oem I'm not 100% sure. might need a different cable

Your throttle is definitely OEM. Is the idle screw on the carb turned out all the way too? If your switching from a PJ to a PWK the idle adjustments are different. The PWK has an idle screw instead of being integrated with the choke circuit like the PJ. If the cable is too short than you need motion pro #01-0604.

I have the idle screw a couple turns out as a starting point but the slide is far from it. If i disconnect the cable from the slide will move into its proper resting place about another 1/4 inch down. Not sure what this cable was used for, maybe i can find a part number when i get home. In the mean time ill start looking for the motion pro cable stated above. Thanks for the help guys

Looked up the part number on the cable 964-000 and it came up with 17910-964-000 which turns out to be a cable for a ATC. I wonder if the previous owner was using a atc thumb throttle? Anyways its not the correct one so i will be ordering a motion pro.

Did some more research on the cable i have, and it seems like people are using this cable with 38 a/s. Im going to have to look at the carb and throttle harder tonight.

It might be the routing too. When I did mine I had to route it different than the previous throttle (not oem).  It did that same thing to me the first time I put it on.

The adjuster on the carb top is all the way down? Remove the cable from the slide, then see if the slide goes down farther in the carb, ie is there something that is causing the slide to stick. I have seen some cables where there is some turn buckle style adjustment in the middle.

I got it figured out. There were globs of silicone limiting how far the arm could travel in the throttle assembly. Im not sure if they are supposed to be there but I cut the silicone out and it works perfectly. I get a fully closed slide and full WOT now. Thanks for all the responses guys

Previous owner probably used the silicone to seal the gasket...and got carried away. Go rip that ride now
