Howdy,

My 1987 TRX250R has:
-Stock Air Intake (Box, Intake)
-K&N Air Filter
-Stock Carb
-Engine is Ported for MID-range.
-Stock Exhaust (I have a mid-range Paul turner pipe, but this reduces my low end power more than i am willing to accept)

I am interested is upgrading my carb, or reeds, but I am "New-To-This".

My questions for you are:

-Have you upgraded your Reeds? Cost? Effect?
-Have you upgraded your Carb? Cost? Effect?

Thank you for your input!

So you're exploring swapping out the stock reed & carb setup but you want to run the stock exhaust?

Short answer to "Havinnoj": Yes.

Long Answer to "Havinnoj": I have the upgraded exhaust, but with the current setup of my bike the stock exhaust fits my riding better. I am not a duner or a racer. I do more trail riding. With the upgraded exhaust I can go faster, but i have to stay higher in the RPM's and if i get slightly bogged down during an hill climb the bikes stalls and leaves me stopped halfway up the hill.

I am interested in the Carb/Reeds because I rode a bike (1988 TRX 250R) with these upgraded parts (Carb/Reeds) and noticed that it had better acceleration and top end power. I am trying to figure out the effect on performance from someone who has upgraded these parts.

If you get the correct pipe it will increase low end power and improve the performance needed to climb hills.  The OEM exhaust is hurting, not helping you.

On a OEM 250 cylinder, the stock exhaust typically makes better power in the 4500 to 5500 RPM range than the aftermarket exhaust systems.  Larger carbs typically hurt the power below 5000 RPM.  The Boysen Rad valve and the V Force reeds seldom help the power below 5000 RPM but will start showing their benefits in the 6000 RPM and up.

With your type of riding it sounds to me like you need more power below 5500 RPM.  The only thing that will give you a big increase in power below 5500 RPM is adding displacement. If you are going to add displacement I would add at least 75cc.  Don't waste a good stock cylinder by boring it to 68 to 69mm trying to finding a lot of power in the 5000 RPM and below.   Raising the compression to an abnormally high level will give some more power in the RPM range where the engine is "off the pipe".

A four stroke, something like a 400 EX might be a better choice for the type of riding your are describing.

Have you tried different gearing? Maybe try a 12T front if you haven't already.

If you do a lot of trail/woods riding you may want to try the boyesen rad valve or the oem cr250 cages. The cr250 cage will give the most bottom end while the boyesen will give more mid range power. You can either go up to a 36mm or 38mm carb for trail riding
