Amsoil Dominator 50/1?
« on: March 14, 2016, 08:01:06 AM »
Hey guys new to the 250r and was wondering if running 50/1 dominator with pump gas is okay? I ran it on my zilla, shees, and sleds never having an issue. My buddy who is a old school local wrench who is a R freak told me to run what Honda recommends. Anybody here running dominator and if so what is your ratio? I would hate to roach this new topend.

I started running the Amsoil Dominator at 50:1 last year after my whole life of using Klotz and I won't use anything else now.

I have been running Dominator 50:1 for quite some time. Been racing mx with mine for the last several years. It's protected mine even during some extreme unforeseen issues such as severe over heating.

I ran Klotz for years love it smells awsome. But I always fouled plugs. So I switched to Dominator years ago because I can buy it localy at 3 or 4 places. And there are 2 dealers nearby.I run it at 32:1.The one dealer told me that the 50:1should be mixed at 50:1 because thats what its formulated for. Also said its better mixed that way that at any less mixtures.

I've been running Klotz R50 at 32:1 for the last seven years.  I think I've only fouled one plug, and that was when I went to start it for the first time at the beginning of a season.  I don't mind mind running a little heavier oil mix either, even if it smokes a little more.  I made it 59 hours on my last topend before I needed to replace the piston, and all they had to do was hone it.

I use dominator but I run 24:1 for my style of riding. I like wide open areas and real fast riding.  I ran R50 in my trinity stage 4 banshee years ago and it worked good in it.  But when I used it in a stocker it would just foul the plugs.  Have had no issues with amsoil and more oil is better in my opinion.  It is cheap enough to buy through the preferred customer discount so why not be on the safe side and mix it up strong?

Everyone has their opinion, and I respect everyone's right to their opinion. But I personally think that the "more is better" philosophy for everything is a fallacy. If it has been engineered to be best at 50:1, then it provides it's best protection at 50:1. Some people seem to think that they compromise their protection to improve in other areas such as "clean burning" attributes. While I can't speak for other companies, I can speak for Amsoil and that is just plain wrong. Amsoil does not sacrifice protection for ANY other attributes. Protection has always been their first priority as a company, its also the main purpose of putting the oil in your gas in the first place, to lubricate and protect moving parts. Dominator, along with several of their other Amsoil 2 stroke oils, has been tested all the way up to 300:1, and still with good protection. But the best protection, along with other attributes, were found at 50:1. Again, I'm not knocking you guys. If it is gives you peace of mind to run at 24:1 or 32:1 or even 20:1, then do it. You are still using the product, and you're happy with it. :redbull:

Well said. Mix it however you want to, realize you may need to compensate with jetting changes. I personally mix it at 50:1 just like Amsoil reccomends and designed it to be used.

You will DEFINITELY have to compensate with jetting changes. lol. There is a considerable and noticeable difference in air fuel ratios with various mixtures. Consider this. Let's say you are running 40:1 and switch to 32:1. You are now putting more oil in and less fuel with the same amount of air that you were before. So essentially, you have leaned your engine out some. So you will go larger on your jets to get that fuel ratio back to where it needs to be with the same amount of air. It is vice versa if you go from 32:1 to 40:1. You are now putting more fuel and less oil in with the same amount of air. So she will be running richer. So you will drop to smaller jets to get back to where you want to be. That's yet another reason why 2 very similar engines running in the same region may use different jetting sizes.

Here's some info as well

Yep, this has been hashed over many times. lol. And a variety of opinions to go along with it. There is so much hear say and old wives tales that have been floating around for years. OP, you will just have to decide for yourself what you want to do, just like every one else on these forums.

I have read on other sites that Honda put 20:1  because oil back in the 80s wasnt up to todays standard. But alot of the top oils of today were around back then.Amsoil was developed in the 60s or 70s.My uncles ran their 250rs at 84:1 with the 100:1 amsoil. They had 4 250r atcs and never had any issues. We rode every weekend.3 aircooled 1 liquid.I had my 85 back then and I used klotz super tecniplate
