What temp does your big bore run at?
« on: May 16, 2016, 07:36:22 PM »
I just picked up another R with a CT350PV engine and a PWR radiator.  I took it down to Winchester Bay the last few days and it ran well.  Temps were in the 50-65ish range.  When riding the tight twisty trails in 2nd gear I noticed my ESR temp gauge would hit 240 degrees!  When riding higher speeds in the out in the open it would hover around 180-190 usually.  Is this standard for a 350?

What surprises me is my 310 has an AFCO dual pass radiator and most of the time it hovers around 130-150 degrees but I can hit 180 under hard duning.  Both quads have air scoops and neither are running an adjustable timing plate.

I'm considering yanking the pwr out and trying to find another AFCO, but it seems a lot of you guys on here aren't running anything more than a stock rad or pwr, so what's the deal with mine running so hot?

Jetting:

40.5 pwk
55 pilot, 1.5 turns out on air screw
dgh needle, clip middle
195 main

Have you tried boiling the gauge to verify it's reading correctly?

No, I just got back from the trip.  I'll have to try something though.  One of the other guys I was riding with mentioned aiming a temp gun at it, but I think I bring enough crap camping, I didn't think I'd need to bring a temp gun too!!

Don't you have a Puma Skeans, what does yours run at?  What kind of radiator?

U might be a bit lean on ur needle. Mine will get warmer when air flow is not as good but also climbing thru the trees.  350 with stock rad.  When air flow is good it's 180 or less. The needle makes a big difference.

Yeah I do run a puma on a stock radiator it doesn't get hot I don't run a gauge but I've never boiled the radiator with the puma or sphinx.

In deep woods and twisty trails where you are going slow and there is almost no air passing through the radiator, high temps are very possible. I have found that the PWR is really not much better than stock when you still have very little air flow. Between the 2, the Afco is probably a better cooler. As others have said, make sure you are not running lean on your carb. Aside from trying the Afco instead, your only other helpful options would be to run a coolant booster, such as Amsoil dominator coolant boost.

Also good questions. We are ASSUMING that everything is correct with your engine. This is not meant to upset you or insult you. Sometimes, it's the little things that are missed. John's just making sure the questions are asked.

I'm not sure what's in it for coolant, other than it looks blue.  I run Engine Ice in the 310, I may have flush the coolant in this one and switch to Engine Ice as well just so I know what's in there.  I also can't speak to the condition of the impeller either, other than when I picked this quad up it had a receipt for a recent engine build.  I was also running straight VP110, so it should be good there.

No worries, you guys have given me a bunch of ideas on where to start looking at least.  It seems the general consensus is leaning towards this thing is in fact running hotter than it should.  Now that I know that, I'll have to spend some time checking out each of the different ideas mentioned in this thread.  Thanks to everyone for the help so far!

Shrouds? Are they sealed to the side of the radiator so all the air gets pushed through the radiator.

^^^This.

I know you said you run shrouds on both of your bikes, but some have less of an air gap between the rad and shroud. I stuffed coarse foam in between my rad and shroud to make sure the max amount of air flows through the radiator. Not around it

Mine was so tight they had a little silicone to seal them tight.
