Potential water jacket leak?
« on: October 12, 2016, 11:33:07 PM »
I was tearing apart my engine to replace the center case gasket due to an air leak when I noticed this rust/corrosion mark on the base gasket:

I'm not sure how water got to that point unless the allen head screw on the bottom of the cylinder is leaking?

Looks quite obvious that your lease is there.

Sometimes those holes are too deep. Pete had me put 2 of the Allen screws on each side with lots of sealer. They are supposed to be a tapered thread for sealing but sometimes the shop doing it uses a straight thread.

I believe that's your culprit, Tbone. The evidence reveals a guilty verdict. I'm with Tony. Clean it up and re-install the screw with plenty of good thread sealer.

This is what I figured. Couldn't see the water coming from anywhere else but that screw. It looks to be sealed up pretty nice but i'll check. I just got this cylinder back from Arlan after I had it re-nikasiled.

I'll seal her up really good and see what happens

When they replate your cylinder is is run through an acid wash that removes a small amount of Aluminum from the entire cylinder. In other words the holes grew in that process. So they are over sized and just need a little extra sealant.
