rebuilt engine????

if a rebuild is done correctly what should to motor react like on first start up?
just rebuilt mine it just quit on me one day tore it apart noticed a lot of play in the crank so I got a new hot rod and threw it in and just got it all back together and on first start it just sounded like crap. and the only way we got it running was by pull starting it. so figured the statter was not tight enough and not getting a good conection.
should they all start hard like this?

If you have to pull start it then something is wrong.  Did you just replace the crank or do a full rebuild?  Did you do a leak down test? If you have an air leak you'll never get it jetted right. Was the noise like parts loose and rattling or was it a detonation type of noise?  A video clip would help, but if you're having to pull start it then either your jetting is way off, you have an air leak,  or your spark is too weak to kick start it.
