YTMAN’S 650

WARNING: Long Story
I built this quad a hunnert years ago. It’s been apart for a long long time. It’s still apart but I finally got to address a huge problem. And since I have the welder out I’m fixing and changing what was already a pretty bitchen ride. When I built this I was racing desert on a 250r. I always ran 22” tire to get up out of the rocks so there was never enough power and I never wanted to build a big little two stroke motor and I kind of wanted a 4 stroke. First I built a 350X and put that in a R. Not fast enough. Honda then came out with the 400ex....shine. Me no likee. Dirt Wheels mag built a XR500 quad that was pretty awesome but they already had a XR600 two wheeler so that got me going. Plus I had one. I emptied out the motor and sent it off to Lonestar. They built a frame around it that would use 250R components. Unfortunately kickstarting a long stroke 4 poker takes a long kick and the kicker hit the footpeg before finishing the stroke. After trying unsuccessfully to fabricate a peg mount that would let the kicker get a full stroke I gave up. Plus Lonestar had an idea on how to mount the back brake pedal coming from the front, like an ATK, that I wasn’t fond of. I picked up a 650L electric start motor and away we go. Lots of problems solved and new ones to be addressed. The motor mounts were just strong enough to hold the motor without starting it. Broken, broken, broken. I was so busy adding metal that I never even got to powdercoat it. The swingarm was trying to leave the frame too. That’s when I decided to tear it apart and do a major. The swingarm pivot has to be tied to the motor like every bike since the 90s. Well that was a long time ago but everything is here to resurrect her once I get the rest of the nagging things rectified.(airbox& intake) plus it’s fun. Maybe after she’s back together and shaken down I’ll even be able to make her pretty. Now I have to figure out how to post pics.

Found this swingarm on eBay a while ago. It’s 19.5” It looks like a Laeger but it could be anything. I cut the front tube so I can use ‘86 pivot parts then added some bracing back in. That way I can attach the pivot to the motor mounts

I found this GIANT front bumper on eBay too. It looked well constructed and said it fit a 250R. I don’t know how without trimming the hood. This frame is 3” taller than stock and it’s close. What better quad for a monster like this to go on? Haha

Nice.  My uncle wanted to build a trx450r/650R hybrid for desert racing but I don’t think it’ll ever happen.  He’s retired from racing and pushing 60 now.  He has the engine and the quad.  He was gonna have Ed Tiexeira build it but Ed is extremely busy.

I hope you finish yours!

Michael88r I actually raced a 400EX/650R hybrid in Best In The Desert a hunnert ....no only 75 .....years ago. Mikey Johnson and his pop Dick Johnson put together a bad ass quad. Unfortunately the difference in our weight and riding style made the quad really hard to ride for me. We managed to finish some races tho. I bet your uncle still thinks about finishing his dream quad,

Wonder if you guys ever met.  His name is Gerald Nunes. He raced Ironman expert.  Won V2R 3 times.  Only got beat once by Cody Mitchell who was a bad ass and less than half my uncle’s age.  Forget what years exactly.  I think his first V2R was about 12 years ago.  Back when Greg Stuart was dominating pro class.

The 400/650 is sweet.

Originally I used a 350x air box and boot. The filter and boot are very restrictive and I didn’t realize(thanks to the strength of the stock plastic airboxes) that the shock was beating the shit out of the box. I cut the front off of an aluminum box that Tim Neiderhart(sp) built for me.(yes Timmyboy) I bought two and proceeded to mount both of them, on different machines,in a way that got both of them beat up. I didn’t feel bad about cutting it up cause I already effed it up. I’ve cut the front off and made a new face with the hole in the right spot, big enough for 250r filter, and a clearance notch for the pipe. Unfortunately I ran out of argon so I can’t weld it up. I’ll get some on Monday.
