What to Do, What to Do
« on: April 12, 2020, 07:21:00 PM »
I picked up an all stock 86 250r in January. I'd like to do some motor work but can't decide what. It's going to be a 100% duner. Mostly Glamis but take summer trips to Winchester Bay and St. Anthony dunes. I'm not a drag racer and not a hill shooter. I want a good all around bike with plenty of low end power to power up the hills with ease. I'm a big boy. 6'1, 250 pounds so that plays in to it.

The last 2-3 days, I've been emailing back and forth with ESR about what to do. He's suggested a few different set ups. A 310PV set up running race fuel and TRX7 porting. A 310PV running race fuel and TRX7 porting with a 4mm crank. He said with the last set up, I'm getting close to price on a 363, just need to have the cases bored. I actually haven't priced them out yet but I'm taking his word for it.

What do you suggest? Give the 310PV set up on the stock crank a try (the cheapest route)? Or do the 310PV set up with the 4mm crank? Or go big with the 363 since the price range is about the same point? Is there a considerable reliability difference between the 310 and 363? Any other set up you think would be beneficial? For what its worth, I intend to run a 38PWK, air box eliminator kit and the bike came with a BDT Wurks exhaust that was never mounted. (please don't hold it against me, it came w/ the bike)

Thanks for the time.

I am a bit smaller 5'7 and 150 pounds and I will be running a 269 with race gas as and ct porting and stock hauled my butt around really good but yet to see. It will be 100 percent dune. But I should think that even a 310 stock stroke would do but if you want to go a bit faster I'd do the 330 or a 310 stroker that's what I'd do if I were you. They bolth sound pretty solid and ESR is a good guy to talk to. But then again I can ask questions better than answer them

I'm 6'2" and 285. I started on a 310 stock stroke. Rode that for a year. Then I took it to Hybrid Engineering and had him do some better porting and add a +4 crank. That 310 +4 was great! I had a lot of fun with it for 4 years. Now I decided that I want more. So back to Hybrid for a 391! Bought ESR's 81mm cylinder kit and a +4 crank. Now this thing has torque! I would suggest building an engine that will make you happy for a long time. Otherwise you will be building another one lol.

Eddie didn’t mention CEO?  Is the bdt wurks a small bore or big bore?  The pipe adds a considerable cost depending on what you go with.  Some have heat problems with the small stinger and 330cc and bigger.  So if you go something besides a trx5, you get into higher cost.  Like trx10 or LED 350G.

I’d like to try a 310 CEO but I’m working out some bugs on my ESR 330 PV.

Lol. That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. Building a bike that I'm going to want to change after a year or two. We're about the same size and it sounds like you weren't a huge man of the 310 stock stroke but the 310 +4 was good enough. Then, you just got bored of it.

He did. That was in one of the earlier e-mails. You think the 310 CEO would be ok on a stock crank? Is it more power then a regular 310? The BDT Wurks is a small bore. At least I think. The bike seller said he wanted to do a 269 or 310 kit so I imagine he wouldn't have gotten the bigger pipe if that was his plan. Is there any way for me to tell? I'd like to utilize this pipe to keep the overall price down on the build and I already have it. Doubt they're is much resale value in it.

You could ask Carlos about the pipe or sell it.  If you want to run it, 310 might be best route.  You could add the stroker crank too.  Makes it 309cc at 72x76.  I think.

CEO is supposed to have a broader power range and stays on the pipe more.  Arlen from LED is very impressed with it.  Lots of info on LED Facebook page.

Might be able to sell the wurks, buy a trx5 and come out ahead.

If you're 250lbs don't waste your money on the 310, you'll be building a bigger motor by this time next year. I'm 6'6" 255lbs and I run an LED 350, good power and torque for my riding purposes.

I would go the 363 route with the new ESR CEO cylinder. You can either get it directly from ESR, or have someone like Arlan @ LED purchase it and have it ported to a further extent.

As long as your bottom end (clutch, trans, etc.) is in good shape, you shouldn't have any reliability problems.

E-mailed Arlan today. He thinks the 310 will be to small and I should go 350. We're going to do a ESR CEO 350 w/ Arlan's porting. He's going to machine the cases for me also. I don't think I can run the BDT Wurks exhaust so I'll have to sell it and buy either an LED 350G or ESR Trx5. The Trx 5 is $200 cheaper but I'm a fan of the raw look.
