Kicker shaft
« on: January 21, 2021, 09:18:09 AM »
The early 85 atc250r engines had a shorter kicker shaft that caused the kicker to rub the clutch cover.  The change  to a longer shaft was changed sometime during production (1985).  Unfortunately I do not know at what exact serial number the change occurred.

Something else interesting is that somewhere between 86 and 89 they changed the cover also so that you don't have to run a collar on the shift shaft

Are there any aftermarket company’s making the kick starter shaft?

Not in oem length.  I believe a company called Direct Drive does or did make some longer ones to clear a lock up clutch cover.

I found a used kicker shaft on eBay today for 14 bucks. Hope it works, I got a few spline teeth missing. Also the gear shifter shaft have teeth missing too. Seller said splines were good. Also said it was only for 86-87 model. After reading this I’ll measure the shaft length, hope for the best.

Pretty sure the 85-86 atc & 86-89 trx all have the same shift shaft

Ya the early shafts don't clear a esr qc cover when I built the puma. I used take out parts on it. First time I went to kick it. It dug into the cover. Had to put a different style in
