Swingarm Pivot bolt upgaded w/zerks

Hey,
 So I'm gonna do this mod and I wanted a little feedback before I did. Were exactly are you drilling the holes in the bolt? I assumed that I'd drill them right where the bearings ride?

I would NEVER cross drill a hollow bolt,,,,,,,,,,  besides if you clean it and anti seize it it will come out for years !!!  I loosen up my swinger bolt and beat it back and forth at least once a season with a big plastic hammer ,.... never ever had one not come out ,,,,,

Good advice. So you just need a 1/16" hole center on the needle bearing on each end. Weld up one side and tap the other or tap both sides with a zirk on one side and a plug on the other. The guy who did one of my quads bought used did not drill any hole at all. :sign0144:

It might work on a 250r, but I did it along time ago on my 250r/cr500 setup and broke the bolt at one of the holes. But in that case the rear engine mount uses the swingarm bolt so there was allot more stress on it.

Ok so it sounds like I wanna drill each hole to directly access each bearing. I'm gonna look at my linkage bolt to see first, but I think I've got it. Thanks for the imput guys.

I got lucky! I took my swingarm off to check it out and look what I found! I still needed to save my chain slider for clearance, and replace all my linkage bushings, but I think this saved me from having to do the mod?

Higgy when people add the grease fitting in the pivot bolt, it doesn't get to the bearings, its too keep the pivot bolt from seizing to the sleeve,
 
but many times the actual cause of the pivot seizing to the sleeve is oxidation,(electrolysis) which is a reaction caused by electricity, in short stray voltage turns one metal into an anode and the other into a cathode, causing one to corrode..

 keep your grounds clean and tight and it will help eliminate stray voltage, along with a occasional  grease or anti seize and it wont oxidize or corrode

 That's interesting to know. When I bought my 86 it was already seized, plus someone had used JB Weld or something to attach the end caps to the frame and swing arm. It was a nightmare, and we weren't sure we were going to get it all apart without damaging the frame. The new swing arm bolt was installed with a liberal amount of anti-seize. Also all the electrical system except the stator has been replaced so hopefully it will never be an issue again.

ya I don't do the mod as I want the full strength of the pivot bolt, but I do keep it greased,
but its a good idea to treat it with something like noalox to stop the electrolysis

anyone that has a boat in a marina  has seen the damage it can do, if you don't have the sacrificial zinc

Does it help that my swingarm pivot bolt has been chromed? Sacrificial zinc/chrome dip???

Is there an R part you havent tried chroming?!?!? haha. I cant imagine chroming a part that is never visible lol.

chrome does help keep from seizing, along with molycoat,

 actually anything to either insulate or protective coating will help it from getting stuck

Lol, I've chromed or tried to chrome everything!! However the whole thing being chromed was an unintended benifit I guess.
