86,87,88,89 Frame and suspension differences?
« on: January 06, 2015, 10:29:11 PM »
I'm looking to buy a 250r and I'd like to know if there are any differences in the 86,87,88,89 frames. Is everything interchangeable? (Arms, swingarm, plastics)
are the engine mounts the same? I know the rod size is different in the engine.  Are the trannies and clutch the same?

Definite no on the swinger. All motors will interchange as well as the internal parts. Trannies changed a gear in 88 or 89 so they cannot be mixxed with 85-87. The rear engine mount changed from 86/87 to 88/89. That's why swingers are not interchangeable. All your a-arms will swap out though. The front motor mounts interchange with all years.

So I can get an 86 engine and swap the crank out for a long rod? Are the cases the same? Or is it just a rear mount bracket that is different?

Don't we have a sticky of the different year compatibilities still?

Cases for all years are the same and interchangeable. If you get a 86 top end and put a long rod in you will have to use a spacer plate.

85/86 trans are the same  and have a taller 5th to 6th, 87 though 89 have the same gear ratios but 87 is unique to itself as far as 5th and 6th gears go.clutch  pushrod ,bearing and pressure plate change thought the years.85/86 had single ball bearing that held up pretty well ,87/88 had 3 ball bearing that would grind itself to nothing and 89 was the best with diff pressure plate and flat Torrington bearing. rear shocks wear different lengths and front stayed pretty close to being the same
