I'm rebuilding a set of rear brakes & the old fiber inserts were in pretty bad shape & really uneven so it was time to make new ones. I found a piece of dense fiber material in the shop that Loren helped me identify as Micarta & after cutting a few slugs with a 1 1/8" hole saw I turned them down to size on the lathe, than used a parting tool to cut them to thickness. Hopefully they last a long time:
