Engine and Bottom End / Atf
« on: September 15, 2016, 07:51:34 PM »
ive been using rotella 15w40 since the late 90s in all my atvs and motorcycles have never had an oil related malfunction since i switched. that said when i worked as an atv /dirt bike mechanic at a local dealer i learned a very inportant thing about factory spec oils the oems (honda/yamaha and even harley) use the absolute cheapest supplier that can meet their specs for the oil they put there name on and they change suppliers almost with the seasons. i have always heard and told others to find an oil that works for you and stick with it. just as an example i have over 4500 miles on an `09 rzr, 12000+miles on a vstar 1300, 400ex stroker i built in `03 stil lrunning strong with hardly any compression lossand still running original clutch plates, `04 scrambler 500 unknown hours. and numerous other atvs, dirtbikes and streetbikes all on rotella 15w40 without 1 single issue or problem and my stuff dosent sit it gets rode and rode hard the 400ex is on its 5th or sixth set of rear tires and i run them till there down to 15-20% tread. the only thing i ever noticed is on the RC51 i had a few years ago was the temp on mine ran slightly higher than my cousins and he used castrol activo but mine shifted smoother than his and never heard any valvetrain noise on mine but his would have a more pronounced chatter at idle. long story short find what your comfortable with using and change it often.

i think my son and i have decided to keep it were going to tear it down and hopefully be able to get by with just replacing gaskets and a fresh topend and reeds. i will make sure to replace the thrust washers that were mentined above. other than that only thing else we will do is replace the suspension, wheel and axle bearings. may rebuild the rear shock and maybe a set of yfz450 front shocks. then ride it. we wil save our money for the next trx build we have been staring at in the garage for over a year. i may pm jerry hall if i run into anything strange in the engine. thanks guys

picked up a running `88 or `89 lt250r (havent run the vin numbers yet) that looks completly untouched except for new maier plastic for $800. havent decided if im going to keep it to play around on or fix the few small things that it needs and resale. any of you guys no what the value on these are now local craigslist is useless as this is the first 1 ive seen for sale around here in a couple of years. i no the `91up is the more prefered but i couldnt help picking this 1 up as it is identical to the first 2stroke quad ever owned 25 years ago. its been sitting for 8-10 years according to the guy that had it he said he put the maier fenders on it when he bought it in the late 90s (originals had been cut) and rode it for a couple years before putting it in his shed. it looks like the clutch has been replaced possibly but the cylinder has never been off. center case seal and sprocket output shaft seal are seeping and it has some slight piston slap. carb is jetted way to rich but other than those small things it runs pretty decent. frame is straight but if i keep it it will get gussets in the front where they are bad to bend. everything else but the plastic and an fmf exhaust is stock down to the handlebars and key switch it is missing the headlight but i think i have 1 stuffed in a box somewhere. im leaning more toward keeping it freshening up the engine and maybe some better shocks. what do you guys think?

I used to run the Berm Raider, when their cost was around $55. They bring over $70 now. Good tire for hard and rocking terrain.

how did they wear i need something with a more open tread pattern but dont want to wear them out in 2 saturdays either.  i know when i was running the maxxis I razors they wore prtty fast due to them using the same compound as the regular razor tires but a more open tread pattern. ive never used the duro tires so am not familier with the compound they use.

Suspension and Chassis / Best Bearing/seal kit brand???

I recently freshened up 2 bottom ends and ended up going with a couple of Boss Bearing kits. Several of the bearings were stamped with "Japan" on them which tells me more than likely the same as OEM. I could not justify spending a $100+ more on basically what seemed like the same bearings.

DO NOT use the crank bearings from the BOSS bearing kits all other bearings work fine. i have had trouble out of their crank bearings if they are not KOYO bearings toss them.

Engine and Bottom End / awww man wtf
« on: December 18, 2015, 10:25:31 PM »
possibly a stroker crank? had that happen once to a buddy he ordered a standard long rod hot rods crank but it was boxe wrong and he got a stroker crank instead. his piston may have stuck out of the cylinder more than yours hard to tell with a pic. just a thought.
