I can believe that it may have taken Kenny 16 hours to build the pipe.  Lets do the math:  $600.00 / 16 hours = $37.50 per hour.  I do not know how well equipped their shop is but I could not keep my doors open if my shop rate was around $40.00 per hour.

It takes 14 to 15 hours to build the production hand coned HPR 19 pipe, silencer and exhaust flange in batches of 5 or more pipes at a time .  Custom pipes and prototypes take longer.

There are a lot of pipe builders that will knock out a tig welded hand coned pipe in 4 to 8 hours.  The majority of tig welds are fuse welded giving 50% to 80 % penetration on most of the welds.  It really slows you down when you try to get 90% to 100% penetration doing fuse welds using tig.   The tig welds viewed from the outside on most of these pipes are beautiful but the welds on the inside have sharp edges, burrs and need a lot of love in the sections where the gas velocity is high.  It takes a lot of time to make love to these high velocity areas and adds considerable cost.

We weld the majority of our pipes with a torch.  The torch produces a weld that is softer and does not tend to crack when you spend the time to make the inside of a hand cone pipe relatively smooth.  It takes a lot of time to produce a hand coned pipe that is built like the old works pipes.  The majority of the hand coned pipes being built today do not have works technology nor craftsmanship but only look like works pipe from 50 feet away.
