86 front spindle upgrade?
« on: April 01, 2014, 08:02:21 AM »
Well, It's about time I upgrade the front spindles on the old 86. The one caliper is starting to hang up on me again and think it's time to end their racing career. I was thinking of getting the 04-05 450R complete setup or would it be better to just find a good set of 88-89 front spindles, hibs and calipers?

The 450 or 400ex both add 1/2" in width. I personally love the 250r calipers, but many swear by the 400ex. I am sure the 450's are fine too. Its really up to you. I'd say get whatever you can get the best deal on.

400ex won't work as they add way to much positive camber that i can't adjust. maybe if I had 400ex arms but I tried that the first time i got the R. I'm ok with width as I'm running +3 arms and it's still under 50" with 3:2 wheels.

Anyone running the 04-05 450R spindles?

Burgard. I had the top joints all the way in and I had like +1 camber. It sucked cuz i had them all cleaned up, powdercoated, new brakes. It sucked! LOL

Joe, cut off the pivots on the uppers and have them re worked for the spindles you want to run, can put on new pivot tubes or go to Heims. Just gonna mess up your powder. Or you could make a lower camber shim, all it is a is a washer to push out the bottom to correct the camber, we do it all the Time for LT 250R s

I can't speak for sure till I take measurements, but I have recently researched that the 04/05 spindles are the same width as 88/89 250r. Also the best geometry with the weight savings in the spindles with a two piston caliper.
It goes fast over bumps too!

there are many threads on atv riders about the 04/05 spindles and breaks and hubs...
the +06 will also work but you would need adjustable upper arms to get a good camber angle,

here is a price quote from zedicus after he did this

heres the list for a 450r front end on a 250r not counting brake pads an sum lil misc stuf... this is a very nice upgrade
