I have been racing it tt for 2 races. It ran pretty well on topend first race.It had a blown flywheel side seal (ebay motor).and no main jet.Second race I had replaced seal and jetted the main at #168.Raced again ran well topend but very sputtery on take off.I havent rode it since the slow jet change. If I rev it it acts like it hit a rev limiter.Changed coil still the same.Im going to take it out and ride it this weekend .The reason I put the #42 pilot in is its the only one I had.Any place to get new cdi or stator.Anyone rebuild stators.I have one like nrw but someone soldered up a big gob of solder on it and it doesnt work.   Thoughts on jetting. Also running boyesen reeds and reed spacer 32:1 91 octain non-ethol amsoil dominator. At the second race guys were telling me it was shooting out sparks.

For your stator: http://www.rickystator.com/

I have one of their stators in in of my R and it has been excellent.

What CDI are you running? OEM I hope. Aftermarket CDI's are well documented to be problematic, I experienced that myself. When you say it acts like it's hitting a rev limiter, that could be a jetting deficiency, or one of the classic problems many of us experienced with aftermarket CDI's.

Sputtery on take-off could mean you still need to dial in your pilot jet and/or slide needle position or even needle profile.

care to share who you got the motor from?  if you purchased from one seller in particular, i'd be concerned of ongoing problems.

I took my 85 250r out yesterday and did some tuning with it. I put a #45 pilot in it and was still a little sputtery on bottom ,topend was awsome. I put the #42 pilot back in it was alot better. I put the slide needle on second leanest groove made it worse. put it back on top runs best. Im racing this saturday I will see how it runs. Im going to put some 110 race gas in aswell. Im thinking of getting a #40 pilot for it.But once I put the Bassani exhaust on it Im sure I will have to rejet.

What is your AIR screw set to ? How many turns out from fully seated.

What NEEDLE are you running ?

Airbox ? Or Open Filter ? Foam or K&N ? Filter Oil ?

Something doesn't seem right with the carb settings. If your running the needle all the way down shouldn't a larger main & maybe different needle be used? Plus the pilot sounds a little on the small side for what you have. It could be a clogged air bleed causing the problems. Did you spray carb cleaner into all the small passages & make sure it came out the other side? The float level is another important thing to check. Also the choke circuit & idle circuit are together on a PJ & the choke assemblies can go bad. Keep us posted on how it goes.

There is a possibility that the needle jet is wore. I don't think they are replaceable on those carbs.

It looks to be in good shape. I ran this carb before with my origonal motor wich was also stock with 20 over bore all stock pipe, reeds, filter with airbox lid on and it would eat stock and slightly modded banshees all day. Im hoping the race gas will help.
