I would like your input on an engine combo. I'm thinking about next year race season and would like to go one of two ways. First combo is a stock cylinder ported by neil with a cool head...18 or 19 cc dome. Or pick up an ESR 310 cylinder with their port work. Money is tight as it always is or I would just go 330. I'm leaning torards the stock cylinder setup unless more funds come along. I'm basically looking for the best bang for my buck. I'll even throw this out there as another option....is the 330 worth it to just save up and go that route? lets put a budget of $1000...what would you build?

I would say more importantly,is your suspension good to go for next year? Adequate setup, serviced, maintenance done on it? That can eat up a budget real fast but if thats all good I would think the Neil ported or the 310 would be choices, maybe even squeeze a Neil ported Esr if budget allows.

Suspension is good...just needs service and that's already in the budget. I race a local series in the Vet A class. I can hang and beat the top rider but I really got to work at it as he runs a 520 BB in his Honda.

1000.00 will get you a 330 non power valve with a 4 mill crank. You can't beat that without spending a LOT more.

edit= This is the link to what I was talking about.

950 as cast, +100 for thier port to it is 1050. That is set up for the 4 mil stroker crank and you get the Free case mods if you send them the cases.
Good luck with whatever you do.

Not the same as the 330 with a stroker but a nice step if you want to keep oem cyl.
Remember to include all required costs having the ports set up for the crank, piston kit, etc etc as you compare the costs of your options.
Good luck.

I think an OEM cylinder w/ 4mm stroker would be an awesome setup to try out. When/if i get another 250r I think i'll go that route

Joe, that 330 stroker would definitely be a good upgrade. And you should even have room to grow after that. A while later, you could get that cylinder ported by someone like Neil or Arlen to really draw the most power out of that cylinder. My ESR 310pv has the TRX 7 porting already, but I really feel like more could be pulled from this cylinder than I have now. I know I have heard a few stories from guys who had their ESR cylinders reported by Neil or someone else and said the cylinders really came alive.

My CT310 was not ported at all from ct and I had my local engine guy port it for mx and wow it is awesome to ride, and now with the full esr head and all race gas dome its even better too. Hard to start rite now but I think its gonna be an animal on the track.
