Author Topic: Just a little heads up on anitfreeze (Read 7415 times)

Some of you may already know this, it might not be a good thing to mix different types or brands of antifreeze.
I've seen where types were mixed like when checking & filling the radiator & afterwards the mix turned to a slime & then when the engine was hot, it turned to solid.

Once it turns solid, that will be a costly repair, so be sure you know what type of antifreeze is in the radiator first before adding any.
If you dont know, best thing would be to drain the system completely & replace, making note of the type you filled the system with.

I run engine ice and have a heater in my trailer too. But that is a good thing to know though.

NOOOO!!.. Yeah it will last 100k miles but it also sludges, I was a GM tech for 11yrs. Stick with green

Unfortunately, some of the green stuff now is the same chemically as dex orange. Have to read the label.

I had aways like and used prestone, but the stuff they sell now, that "mixes with all colors of antifreeze", is basically green dex-cool.

So last time I had to get antifreeze for my truck I got the yellow/gold stuff sold by Zerex. Only problem I have is you cannot see the fluid level on the stock overflow reservoir unless you get about 2 feet away.

I don't use green or orange coolant, I use yellow! lol. I have used a propylene glycol mix in my vehicles for quite a while now and like it very well. But I agree with Neil's original comment, just best not to mix coolants, just to be safe.

Thats right, know whats in the radiator before you add any extra.

I guess somebody needs to do some research to find out the scoop, but I dont know where.
All I know is what I seen, & it was a chalky looking mess all inside the cooling jacket & God knows what condition the water pump was in, trashed I'm sure.

Orange and green makes mud.
I use the the cheap green premix from parts stores and it has worked for me fine. No matter where your at you can always find it.

I remember reading somewhere not to mix the two types of antifreeze or it sludge's. There is Ethylene glycol and Propylene glycol. Engine Ice is Propylene glycol and if you read the back it says to make sure to flush your system with distilled water until only water comes out because you do not want them to mix. Not to mention who knows what else is in some generic antifreeze's.
