Hello from New Jersey
« on: January 04, 2014, 06:33:31 PM »
Hi.  My name is Joe, I'm 30 years old, I live in NJ, and am new to the forum / 250r world.  I'm a gear head and a geek at heart, If it has an engine or computer, I will find out how it works.
I just purchased my first 250r right before thanksgiving after wanting one since i was about 15.  I have been riding for about 17 years, started on my brother in law’s Kawi ATC, after that I had a few old honda CB's that I just rode in the pit, and bought a trx250x when I was 20 (I still have and ride the 250x).

Enough about me, and on to the new toy:
It's a 1986 purchased from the second owner and has a bill of sale!  The second owner has had it since the 80's and it took a good bit or persuasion for him to sell it to me.   The quad has works front shocks, ITP Holeshot HD back tires on beadlock wheels, FMF fatty pipe, stock jug - don't know the bore yet, last owner said possibly 1mm over.  The jug is ported, and the quad has some other small items here and there, handlebars, grips, throttle lever, etc.  The quad doesn't come without problems, and I plan on addressing all of  these over the winter, but time and cash flow will predict the  schedule.  Major ones are a cracked frame on the left side on that piece that makes a triangle on the bottom of the frame towards the back (below the shifter), bad A-arm bushings, steering stem bearing, carrier bearings, etc.  All stuff I knew about going in to the deal
My goal is a frame up rebuild concentrating on the chassis.  I want a shiny powdercoated gusseted rolling frame with good bearings / bushings when I'm done.  By then I'm sure it won't be easy to put the old seat & plastics on and I might go further.

Thanks for looking, Let me know what you think

The first R I bought had the same seat cover. Kinda went with the times back in the day. Welcome to our 250r site where answers are what we like to help with. We are sure you will find more problems than meets the eye. But we all been there and done that so many times its not a problem anymore, just the next build step. Try to get before and after pics to see all the great work you have done.

Thanks everyone.  I'll be sure to document the rebuild when the time comes and post a thread about it.  I've been reading on here for the past few months soaking up information and ideas, glad to see the 250R community is still so strong after all these years.

Hey I'm from New Jersey too! I'm assuming from your user name that you're a piney? I'm right up in hunterdon county like 2 minutes from the PA border

Thanks again everyone.  I've been researching / window shopping parts for this rebuild. Slowly getting there and will post some questions soon before I purchase.
Brett: Yep, I'm a piney down in Ocean county.  Beautiful area where you are at though. I don't get up that way often enough.
I'm not a Mustang fan myself, but they are still fun.  Nothing against them, just too 'You got one, me too' for me to own.
