Oregon Riders - Mandatory ATV Safety Card in 2014 on Public Land - Trails, Sand Dunes

Starting in 2014 Oregon is requiring ATV riders of all ages to carry their ATV Safety Card with them on any public land (trails, dunes, etc.).

I just got around to taking the test. Barely skimming each chapter, taking the chapter tests and 50 question "final exam" took about 45 minutes.  Be prepared for a few poorly written / illogical answer choices :beguiled:

at least OR allows you to do it online.  to ride public forest and etc in TX have to take the actual in person course...

Ain't that the truth! I got a few wrong because the actual answers were completely illogical, like the question about what you do if you stall out on a hill. Do you safely get off & push it to the bottom or ride it back down. I said ride it back down & I was wrong. Apparently 32 years of riding experience isn't enough:stupid:

Yup that question didn't seem to have any good answer choice.. same with the question about a rider getting blowing sand in his eyes.  I'm glad they've made this online test mandatory but I doubt it will to much to prevent accidents.  However, I was surprised to see the percentage of accidents that happen on the dunes versus all other riding areas.

The plan started with the young ones. Learning safety at that age is important when they grow up and start drinking. The dunes are very unsafe here in Oregon. High horsepower sand rails and young kids riding without using a right of way passage promotes dangerous riding area's. I will have to get my card this year but its best that everyone knows the rules regardless of age. My personal opinion is the state is just making up another way to get money by giving tickets for non compliance.

Agreed.  Ticket/ money-needing gov't or not - I approve of needing some guidelines/regulations before anyone can hop on an ATV in the dunes (or anywhere).  I heard the max fine for not having an OHV permit and safety card is $180.  I emailed them about the fine for not having the safety card.

Speaking of our dunes - Tony, [MENTION=322]broken1[/MENTION], other Oregon dune riders - check out the Save the Riders Dunes.  They're working to reopen some of the dunes that have been taken over by non-native vegetation.

I wish our state did something like this actually. Silver Lake is becoming such a punk kid hangout, with booze and who knows what else in the already dangerous dunes. Don't get me wrong, i've had my party days, but 1 thing i refused to do is ride while drinking. I ride too hard to try it. Last year i actually had 1 night where i had 3 beers after work and decided i wanted to ride(i was by no means drunk or feeling drunk at all), so i loaded up and headed there, about 45 minutes im riding in the entrance of the dunes, i did 1 hot lap and was dead(i usually can ride all day), the alcohol hit me hard, i was tired so fast it wasnt even fun.

Now off my story, i see so many kids in truck boozing it up, or getting high in the dunes, and it just pisses me off, especially o holiday weekends when theres a good couple thousand in our small dunes, just too little of space to **** around with. We also have a ton of people come up the backside of the directional dunes, or drive across the drag strip during a drag, it just blows my mind, and then i roost them with sand. I literally had a guy on a dirtbike try and go across the drag strip, stall out in my lane(i had guys 4ft away  on each side of me), i had to lock up and stopped 6 inches from broadsiding him. The fear in his eyes, i couldnt even talk i was so frustrated. i just sat there and waited for him to start up and leave.

We need a test of some sort and for the DNR to check for the card upon entry IMO

As of last year sand rails in Oregon must have liability insurance. This is keeping so many useless idiots from causing harm to us quad riders.  My quad is no match for a 3000 pound drunk idiot speeding across the dunes to show off.

Amen to that! We dont have too many jerk off buggy drivers, its mostly just the 6-10,000 pound trucks or jepps, and kids who think they know how to ride.

Yeah, I've had a few accidents in the dunes. Mostly my fault. However I've never hit or hurt anybody! I was hit by a young kid years ago and broke a bunch of bones that time!!
