how to polish jugs and cases??

I have seen many bikes with polished jugs and cases but what are the steps to do this? to polish anything really I have only cleaned up wheels. how do you take a peace of aluminum and bring it to a chrome look?

If you have alot of time and a few tools you can get real close to a professional job. You can do much with a polisher from harbor freight. I sold my extra one to a member on here and he did a great job on his Puma cylinder. That was seanoktm. The aftermarket cylinders can be done with great success bot the stock ones are real rough. Some just do the sanding by hand starting with 220 and ending with 1000 grit. I will post a few of the hand tools that speed up time.

your better off paying someone else to do it. i did one set of cases and 2 cylinders, swingarm, forks etc. that was a few years ago but i wont ever mess with polishing again. you got a long miserable road ahead if you attempt it all by hand

okay what about painting or powder coating the jug and cases? I can get powder coating done at cost or products but what do I have to do the get them ready for powder? do I do the cases in sections or all together?

I am taking on the task of polishing things up myself. Looking for tips, tricks and tools to get into the tight spots. I picked up a 3/4hp polisher and do most of the sanding by hand. Figured I would try to revive a thread instead of making a new one. Thanks

Those sand/roll cartridges Higgy has get down to 3/8" in diameter. Sometimes you just never get down inside the real tight corners. In time you will realize your getting too picky. The buffing wheels available start out at 1/4" wide. After that you can stack wheels for a wider pass.

Try not to make the mistake of using too coarse of a sanding cartridge. You can do a lot of damage in a small amount of time. Stay away from 80 to 120 grit unless you really need it. 180-220 usually is easy to get buffed out. 240-400 is alot easier to finish out

What about throwing it in the oven? Do you only do that near the finishing process? What temp, duration of time?

Not to shabby I guess. But an easier part to polish. Started on a spare jug I have. I would like to move on to harder pieces so just looking for tips. Thanks

Thats for winter polishing. 200 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Alot off guys hand sand with a fine paper before the final buff to shine. I was surprised how well this works. If you have a flat surface a small orbital sander or DA with 500-600 paper will polish out real fast.

Do what tony says. Take your time went polishing. I only use two smaller harbor freight buffers and a few air tools. Tony really helped me when i polished my puma cylinder almost 3 years ago.
