89 clutch upgrade ?
« on: February 01, 2014, 09:17:14 AM »
I'm working on an engine thats been sitting on my bench for the last year. I'm putting the clutch together and not sure if I'm missing a washer or not. The question is there supposed to be one between the needle bearing and the preasure plate? I don't remember when I took it apart if there was one. The reason I ask is I looked at a couple parts fiche's online and they don't show there to be one. But in my Clymers manual the diagram shows one.

Yes the washer should be between the needle bearing and pressure plate. The 89 250R fiche doesn't show it but the 450R ones do. Part number for the bearing and washer are the same:

Yes, If you have the needle bearing lifter, there should be a recess machined into the pressure plate for that washer to sit in. The earlier pp had no recess machined and is flat with the ribbing in there. The 89 needle bearing syle pp is cut deeper than the ribbing.
You definitely need the washer to go with the needle bearing.

Thanks, good to know about the 450r parts. Yes I do have the 89 presure plate. I didn't think it would be a good idea having the bearing ride on the aluminum plate would think it would just eat it up.
