Any of you guys run neck braces? A buddy recently got in a wreck and for the most part walked away. But his neck brace was broken in about 4 places, probably saved him from being paralyzed or killed. He's running the Alpinestars Bionic brace so I was looking into getting one.

Your thoughts?

If I still raced alot like I used to there is no doubt that I would be wearing one.

My brother uses a Leatt and I don't run one at all. I borrowed his last year and now I'm hooked. with getting older my recovery time is much longer than it use to be and I race for fun so no need to get messed up for no reason.

I'm thinking alpinestar as well or the atlas but they aren't cheap either.

Your neck isnt cheap to fix either if its even fixable after a bad crash. Cant fix paralyzed.  Just remember that if your using cost as your justification.

I personally dont run one.  I have been on both sides of the fence.  Im not sure if they help or hurt.  Had a girl here recently racing MX break the middle of her back where the neck brace goes down and stops at.  basically it saved her neck but broke her back because it concentrated all the force at the tip of the brace. Hard to explain but she was going over a table jump that was about 2-3' high.  It was more like a speed bump, and she wasnt a quick rider.

I have always wondered if they did more harm than good.

Wonder if you are better off with those old school type cushions that just wrapped around your neck??

Personally i'd rather have any other part of my body break than my neck. So if I break my collarbone or back but save my neck. I'd say that's a pretty good trade off.

I'm going to try them all on before buying

I run a leatt. All who watched my race videos know how much real use ive got out of it!

I run it and a leatt pro lite chest protector and I have to say even though I haven't put them to the test they are light as hell and already worth it knowing I have them.

Think of it as a condom. You might not need it and you can get by but on the other hand if you don't wear one you might end up with something that changes your lifestyle. It's too cheap when you look at it that way.

Both of my boys use Atlas. One took a terrible hit that broke his brace but he walked away. Atlas replaced it for free. In my opinion the brace did its job and I couldn't be happier. We went with the Atlas since it doesn't put pressure on the back/spine.

I agree the cost should be compared to what you will save. And its your neck were talking about. Personally I won't ride dirt. Sand is soft and go through extremes not to crash. I do see many people using them on the motorcycle on the dunes. Those guys literally fly from one dune to the next.

You could also check out EVS. I use one of their braces and it has saved my butt many times. They are also very affordable for the quality.
