First start after rebuild and my kicker slips. Whats the most common reason this happens

Sorry, I responded on the other sight first. Here was my response.

I just ran into this issue. Most likely, either the teeth on one of the ratcheting gears are worn down or the tension spring behind the active ratcheting gear is getting weak. The only way to know for sure will be to take the clutch cover off, remove the clutch and basket and inspect the kicker mechanism behind it. And yes, it will continue to get worse.

Ok thanks for all your help rablack. Ive taken them out before but didnt fix the problem. Ill keep ya updated. The motor idled great btw. So relieved. Ill tear the kicker apart tomorrow.

Awesome on the motor. Glad you are squared away. You have 3 options if the tension spring on the ratcheting gear is weak.
Option 1: Find one for sale somewhere. They are discontinued through Honda
Option 2: Stretch the spring out and put it back it. Not sure how long it will work for or even if it will help much, but that is what I did to mine just a week ago. It is working thus far
Option 3: Spec the spring out, and order one from some place like McMaster Carr. Next time I tear mine apart, I will probably go this route.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if a spring out of something else wouldn't work, like a cr 250 or even a crf250r or a crf450r or a trx 450R. Honda may not have deviated much with the parts they used for newer kickstarter mechanisms.

I stretched the spring on my kicker. So far so good. My clutch cover is a ha2. What year is this and is there a washer that goes on the shaft before I put the cover back on?

If it had a spacer on the kicker shaft between the outer gear and the cover then no washer is need, if no spacer then yes a thrust washer is needed. Hope that helps.
