New from Maryland... First 250r.
« on: March 24, 2014, 12:42:15 PM »
Hi guys/girls,
I just picked up my first 250r over the weekend. It's a 1986 model. Unfortunately, the guy I bought it from purchased it as a trade-in at a local motorcycle dealer about 15 years ago, so he didn't know exactly what had been done to it. He said he rode it 3 times, and I believe him. This thing is very clean, and like a 90's time capsule build. I think I have most of the parts figured out... just wish I knew more about the engine. Is there anyway to tell what year it is from any casting numbers, or the engine serial number? I assume it was built for flat track racing based on the wheel/tire setup. The front tires are custom cut Mini Cooper radial car tires! After riding it a few hours over the weekend, I'm thinking about getting a more mid-range friendly pipe, some softer ATV front tires (you really feel impacts with those high pressure, stiff sidewall tires!) and some full front fenders. Riding in the woods/trails with race cut fenders stinks. You get soaked quickly.
Here's what I know it has...
Paul Turner type 6 pipe w/ Big Boy silencer, Dura blue rear axle and spider setup. It's geared 14/39. It has silicone hoses on the engine. It has White Brothers front shocks. It has the Answer Pro Taper bars, Graydon nerf bars, and Douglas wheels. It has a rear grab bar, engine and swing arm skid plates, and a bent front bumper (lol.) If you can help identify anything I missed... please do! Here are the pics:

Looks like a very nice (clean) R to pick up!  Are you planning to do anything to it or leave it as-is?  Welcome to the site!

I have some factory style decals coming for it... and I need new front fenders and tires.... but I'll probably ride it as is other than that for now. I would like to try a different pipe as well.

Nice find.  I'd give that pipe some time and see how you like it.  When I switched over from 4 strokes, I wasn't used to the midrange hit, but my riding style changed and now I love a pipe like the pt.  If you do sell it, let me know or post it on here.  It'll sell quick.

So I spent a few hours scrubbing the plastic with Clorox soff scrub with bleach, and a scotch brite pad, and then applied my new decals. Here are the results:

I want to powder coat my wheels gold, and get a stock seat cover to finish the look.

Cool... I'm from Edgewood.
I'm always looking for new places to ride locally.
