visiting hawaii - looking for guidance

thinking of surprising the soon to be mrs with a trip to HI (she thinks we are going to vegas for our honeymoon) in mid August.  from researching, I think I have it narrowed down to either Oahu or Maui.  we are pretty laid back, might do a little sight seeing, always up for good food and beverages.   looking to just get away from everything for a few days and relax

got any suggestions?

Well congrats sir! Enjoy it! I've had a few friends go to Oahu, they all loved it. I too am trying to find a way to get out there soon. Have a hawaiin beer with josh. Maybe show him how to ride his R or let my wife show him how to ride, either way is fine lol.

Same here, my wife and I are going to be vacationing in Hawaii next year. Any recommendations, like atvmxr said, would be awesome for us as well.

I havnt been to Maui but I lived on Oahu for a bit ... And its pretty fun there is a lot of the general touristy stuff hiking snorkeling surfing and the such.  Its a great place to hang out and relax and sit by the beach  or you can go north on the island and go skydiving

My wife and I went to Kauai for our honeymoon. Did a dinner cruise along the Na Pali coast. Rode atvs @ Kipu Ranch. Snorkeled @ Tunnels Beach. And sat floating in the ocean drinking Mai Tai's.

Can't wait to go back. We stayed at the Hilton in Lihue.

When I was out there I was in the  carpenters union... So I'm not sure what's out there  for office corperate type jobs but if your in a trade the unions are real big

I had a job offer to work in HI last year.  I strongly considered it, for several weeks.  but the initial pay was low and after adjusting for cost of living was only like $35000 a year.  Which is okay, but retarded pay for a licensed professional engineer - I got kids to put through college and a 250r addiction to feed!!!

From what I can tell Oahu is the most heavily populated, which means more stuff to do, but also less elbow room.  I live in the 3- 4th largest city in the us , so I'll take something simply for being less crowded

Ill keep this short because I have so much good stuff to say about home.

generally Hawaii is much slower then the US mainland. Oahu is the most heavily populated of all the islands. Oahu is also the busiest Island of them all. Maui would be the next busiest island but definitely slower than Oahu. every island has there scenic views and tourist hotspots so regardless which island you choose to visit you will not be disappointed. If you want a slower pace more kick back environment I say kauai, maui, or, the big island. Little more up beat, lively nite life, and, shopping,  I say Oahu. Every island will have their own cool places to visit.

Do some quick research on each island and see which one has the most things that interests you. Perhaps you can island hop.

Awesome information. My wife and I were also considering Maui or Kauai. I've did not know of Oahu but I will have to research it as well. That dinner cruise sounded pretty sweet, Rupp.

20 years ago this year me and the wife went to Oahu and Maui. I enjoyed Maui much more simply because we are not into shopping and bar scenes. But no matter what you will love Hawaii and even in the middle of summer it was never to hot because the ocean regulates the temp.
But I did see the biggest cockroach in my life in Hawaii Haha and this was in a brand new hotel! it crapped turds the size a small mouse!
