Lectron Tuning Issue
« on: July 14, 2014, 09:35:26 PM »
Having some problems going wot with a bike Im messing with.  303cc stock cylinder, 44mm lectron with pd-1 needle and single feed jet.  Seems my needle is set close at least, idle to mid is snappy and clean.  Past half throttle to wide open just bahhhhh like a rev limiter, like its too fat. Ran power jet wide open and completely shut, doesn't seem to help.  Tried the needle way low and high to see if I could get it to try to clean out but no luck. Other than trying different ignition stuff is there something goofy I'm screwing up ?  Is 44 just waaay to much for that cylinder?  I appreciate any suggestions!

Did it run ok with another carb? If so that would eliminate any other issues. You could have the wrong needle causing it to be rich. I'm not good with the lectron gas needles though.

You do have the flat part of the needle facing the motor correct?  Flat part toward the air filter will run like crap.

Yeah flat is towards motor.  All I have are alky lectrons, I just got a different power jet and needle for one to try out.  Never gas tuned one so I'm struggling a little.  Its a complete new bike (to me) I rebuilt and starting with the lectron.  I'm not ruling out an ignition issue, cdi was toast right off the bat.  Was told the R was sitting for like 6 years when I bought it.

Very first thing is to close the spark plug gap up to .016-.018 with the stock ignition when every you have probablems like you are having to see if the problem improves. if it does then you know the ignition is getting weak.
call Packard and use the needle he suggests. the 44 will work fine on your 303.
Anyone looking for a great builder I highly recommend the following.
For CP products dealers I would recommend:
Arlan at LED(site sponsor), Pete Schemberger at Hybrid Engineering, Mat Shearer at Shearer Custom Pipes, Dennis Packard at Packard Racing, and Nate McCoy of McCoys Peformance.

Other great builders I also would recommend: Neil Prichard, Jerry Hall, Bubba Ramsey and James Dodge.

He's the one I bought the needle and pjet from, I'll give him a call and double check.  I figured with the jet completely closed it'd for sure clean out.  I'll open up my  plug gap and see if it gets way worse, always set them to .018".  Thanks for the suggestions!

Going to swap coil, reg, and cdi just to eliminate those tonight.  Was wrong, needle is 5-2XL.

Only other thing I can think of would be the seat in the carb.  May be a larger one since the carb was on alky?  Would be a good question for Packard when you call him.

make sure the float bowl level is not to high being to high will make them run rich

CDI box is neutered.  OEM one was bad when I bought the bike, bought a Dynatech one to replace it and evidently its bad or a rev limiter is set really low.  Threw a buddies OEM back on and revved right up like it should.

I appreciate all the replies and help!!  Guess I better find an OEM one somewhere!

Yeah for a prox 330 it did run good.  Got it all rebuilt and blew 2nd gear out of the case in like 4 places last trip so I'm starting from scratch with the whole bike.
