Author Topic: Pipe and flange fitting issues (Read 3646 times)

I took my pipe off the other day to fix a leak at the flange, and found that the flange did not fit tight. It was leaking because the gasket blew out, which I'm pretty sure happened due to the loose fit. Are there different flange and pipe sizes? Just curious as to what I need to do. I will post pics after I get out of work.

If you are talking about an oem cylinder, I am pretty sure it should be standard stuff. I was never impressed with the stock exhaust flange and the first thing I do is replace with ESR flange. It is longer and fits/looks better.

I saw this while looking at ebay. The exhaust flange has 3 orings on it. I made up a couple steel ones that were stock replacements. Used the 2 o-rings like most of the after-market ones now have. The pipe was blowing exhaust out the stocker. But mine sealed it up nice and tight.

Pics uploaded. The flange is all the way in in the pics and there is still about an 1/8" to the top of the flange. there is about a 1/16" gap between the wall of the pipe and the flange. I'm not sure if the gaskets will fill the void, but it doesn't seem like a good fit to me... The pipe is FMF, and that is about all I know about it. It looks like an atc pipe to me, but I haven't been around this stuff for long enough to tell. Any help would be appreciated!

You are missing the steel ring that goes on the exhaust flange. They have been discontinued but a thick o-ring may do the trick. Thats what I did with my OEM replica's. 2 o-rings to seal twice as good.

Do you make them? Or do you know where I could get some of those? Or would I be better off with a new flange all together?

I tried to put the orange oring esr uses in theres since I had spares and put it in a oem flange and I think it blew it out, bought a motor off CL and rode it just one day " just to see what motor was about" . when I did it , it didn't even last a whole day, but like bowtie said , I just replaced it with an esr flange, been havin pretty good luck with them sealing,

Other thing is, that type of pipe, in my experience, is pulled to the right side by the springs and doesn't seal as well as a pipe that comes straight forward and out through the frame on the right side.

You would be correct on that... That was going to be my next question... Looks like I'm getting an esr flange and a new pipe sooner than i thought! Thanks for the feedback, everyone.
