smoothing out casting flaws

This is not for a R but the principles I would figure to be the same. I got this Tecate-4 engine I'm putting back together. The cylinder in unported and it has some excess material from the casting. I'm not going to port it. I'm just wondering if I could screw up the performance by knocking down these sharp edges and high spots.

In general
I believe there's nothing wrong with cleaning up ports

Ur best bet for performance improvment
Is to clean up the exhaust ,lower and reed ports
Don't dig too deep ,just enough to clean it up

Removing excess material and rounding sharp or flat edges that protrude into the air flow cannot harm performance. I believe it is called clean and match. The aluminum that surrounds the sleeve can be removed if it blocks the sleeves ports.

one thing to consider, as im not sure of your plans about resale...once you clean it up its no longer a untouched cylinder,  you wont gain much by cleaning, but will depreciate it in the process, just something to consider,

Funny you should say that. All trx250r cylinders untouched were gone through to remove casting flaws and anything unexpected left behind from the cast. You will observe slight clean and match work with any 250r cylinder. The work is very course (120 grit) but none the less was done. I doubt the tecate cylinders were any different.

i thought it was his own bike but ya if your going to sell then leave it be and just slap it back together. either way if you smooth it or not, dont expect a huge difference . doesnt look like the average dremel will get in there very good anyways. probly better off not doing anything

What you need is one of these:

I tried using a dremel with the snake attachment first but the micro die grinder made it a lot easier. It's very compact, has an 1/8" collet & a variable speed dial on the back.

I may just leave it, I dont know. I'm not looking to gain power, if I was I would just send it out and have it ported. I just figured while its apart why not smooth it out. I was going to part this bike but some of the extra parts I was selling were moving very slow. So I decided to just make it another winter project and put it back together. I.m not going to dump a bunch of money into this, just fix or get whats needed.
