Quick Water Pump question
« on: February 07, 2015, 09:55:21 AM »
Is the water pump supposed to turn freely or should there be a little resistance? It doesn't turn hard but its not like a car water pump that turns more freely. I am guessing that seal with the spring on it makes it turn harder.

I suppose to there is no lubrication yet and once I put it together the antifreeze will lubricate it some.

When installing we always put a dab of petroleum jelly on the mechanical seal and the white porcelain it rubs against to ensure they do not wear out on start up before the water/antifreeze gets in there.

I looked around and couldn't find any Vaseline so I used motor oil. Does that sound right for it to be somewhat resistant to turn? My guess is the spring pushes on that seal so it will make it someone resistant to turn.

It should have some resistance. Did you install the copper wash as shown in the diagram?

Are you sure the copper washer isnt #10? I am pretty sure that 11 was a black machine type washer and the copper one was on the impeller.

Good, at least I dont have to pull that again because that black washer is the one I put on the shaft before I put the impeller on, then the copper one went on the outside of the impeller. With any luck I may have it running tonight.

Yes it should not spin freely. Some slight resistance. The spring is pushing on the mechanical seal. Thats how it seals. A drop of oil or grease won't hurt. Just so it has some lube before it gets running.

Well I have some leaking out the weep hole. Now I am wondering if I put something in wrong or if I am missing something. It was leaking pretty good so I turned it over a few times to help seat the seals and it did slow down but it did not stop. Anyone have a good pic of how that black seal with the spring was supposed to go on?

Did you put the new porcelain in with the rubber behind it like post 7. We don't have a thread with pics. It took one guy 2 attempts http://trx250r.org/threads/3522-Water-pump-replacement-tricks?highlight=water+pump+rebuild  I lost my rebuild thread on .net. Will have to do another on on this site.

The only thing I replaced is the bearing. It sat for the last 7 years and didn't leak. I might have to get a kit but would like to try it one more time. If you look at the pic that is the way I installed it, is the mechanical seal the right way? The right side went in first. The way its laid out is the way it went in. Is there anything missing?

The mechanical seal is all one piece. The metal part of it is still in the clutch cover. We cannot tell from the pic which side you have facing the porcelain. Then again no one has seen the other side as it is attached to the metal piece in the clutch cover. But it does look correct to me. I believe as the impeller turns your seal is turning also.

So which one is the mechanical seal? As far as I can tell there is a white seal that is in the impeller, I never took that out. Then you have a black rubber piece with a spring on it. The metal part in the clutch cover I never took out either. Can you explain whats what? I took some closer pics. If you look at the black rubber piece with the spring on it I put the right side in the clutch cover first, that end is more pointed. It looks like that black rubber piece could be replaced, that doesn't spin I don't believe. I think only the white piece in the impeller spins. Which part do you think is leaking?
