Author Topic: CP vs Pro X cylinders? (Read 5493 times)

I'm finally ready to upgrade from my Pro X 310 to a larger displacement engine probably a 370 or 350. I have always had a pro x cylinder, but as I've researched, the cp industries cylinders seem to be more advanced then the pro x as far as port layouts etc. Esr is out of the question for me, don't want to offend anyone or start a pissing contest but I just dislike the quality of their cylinders, that being said. My question is this, for some more coin one can build a cp engine, but the nikasil plated aluminum worries me. I'm used to being able to bore one out if a piston grenades. Having a two stroke is not a matter of if, but when one goes as far as I'm concerned. I know in the 450r world if one blows bad enough the cylinder can be tig welded up, bored and re plated but that seems expensive. More than likely going to have Hybrid do the build, as a hear good things about him. Bike is mostly used for duning, some trail riding. Don't flog on it that much so I'm not really worried about my tranny. Would you guys do a 350 or a 370? I know the rod angles can get a little iffy on the stroker motors. It'll be getting a new crank and all new bearings in bottom end, already have a 39 pwk, 01 cr ignition, rad valve and oof pipe. Yall give your opinions on the matter after that long rant

If I didnt find that deal on the sphinx 350 I have now, Arlan would have built me a esr 363...still trying to tune it crisp but safe, but it is so smooth and quick, you cruise top of 5th in the trails in no time and dont realize you are going that fast so quick you change gears and smooth power...can only imagine with +4stroke how light the front would be. But Arlan was my builder, or the builder of my engine I should say. Before I bought that engine I talked to him about options and he was adamant on ESRs quality. To each there own, if you want pro x the price difference is closer to have the best cylinder. Talk to Pete(?) and he will guide you for sure, only heard good review from them.

I talked to Pete at hybrid myself and asked the same question he said the nikasil cylinders actually last longer and have better heat transfer and you can send them out and have them replated if needed my motor will be going to Pete here soon to build a 363 sphynx

That would be the ticket IMO, with a custom pipe to match it all. I have the LED pipe and intake, and its disappointingly fast and smooth, no crazy powerband hit just acceleration. Then again, its a low port mx style port job I have. Im more of a mid to top end hit kinda guy but im happy with it, for what i paid for hehe. Im just waiting on OHV ban to lift to tinker more on jets and I should be able to smoke buddies ported ktm 380 dirt bike.

If the extra $500ish dollars is not a problem, I would definitely go with a sphinx. I have one from Arlan and it moves out. It has a wide power band and even with tall gearing before you know it your in sixth thinking slow down dummy before you hurt yourself. Pete and I think Bubba are experienced with cp cylinders also.

If it was me I'd go to a sphinx and day of the week that plating is hard as hell the only thing that will hurt it is a spark plug porcelain. For builders I prefer Pete at Hybrid Engineering but choose who ever you think first your needs best.

Yes the heat transfer is better with the aluminum cylinder with the thin spray on sleeve. Millenium can fix any mishap to the aluminum cylinder and spray on a new sleeve at the same price as boring a steel sleeve. Its all good with CP Industries cylinders. I only have 3 of them now I sold the 4rth to [MENTION=463]Skeans1[/MENTION]

I wouldn't put an OOF pipe on a dune/trail bike. You will be happy with a good inframe.

I couldn't imagine running anything else now. I love my OOF, had it on for over a year now and love it. Don't have to turn my foot sideways to kick it, gets the heat away from my leg and the bike.

Not trying to be rude by saying this, but I have my opinion on esr, nothing against them really, I love what Eddie does for the r community, I just feel like a lot of his stuff is somewhat cheap and mainstream. On the 350 cylinder the sleeve was crooked in the bore, piston to wall clearance was too tight. Nuff said on that.

Also Jesse this was on an older esr cylinder. Don't want it to seem like I'm above using esr parts, I order a lot of stuff from esr, this is just going to be my final hurrah so to speak with my engine. I'm going to build the best of the best and call it good. If I were to build another bike I'd use a esr cylinder no doubts. I'm just not a fan of the older cylinders, which is all I have experience with.

Thanks for all the input guys, Im sold on doing a Sphynx cylinder with Hybrid doing the build. I believe since this is going to be my last engine Ill just pull out all the stops and do a 363. I have a set of mint 85 cases Im going to have polished, then do all new bearings in the bottom end and start from there.

Heck why not just jump up to a puma?
